Is it worth paying the £35 membership fee? DF is hoping they have LCD TVs and I'd like them to have some car seats.

Anyone go regularly?

I do, but mainly for general provisions. I find that it is well worth the membership fee. The second time I went, I compared what I'd spent with a similar shop at Sainsburys. I'd saved, on a shop of about £250, about £100.

That did not include any electricals or other equipment, just food and household essentials such as loo rolls, etc.

SueW · 04/01/2007 22:40

We let our membership lapse. There aren't enough of us in the house to get through the bulk buys in a reasonable time and we don't have enough storage space. Food packs are too big.

Get a friend to take you in as a visitor so you can look round first.

Freckle · 04/01/2007 22:43

Should also add that, although they do electricals, I've never seen car seats there - although, being past that part of childhood, I've never looked for them.

AitchTwoOhOhSeven · 04/01/2007 22:48

get a pal to take you first, suew's right. i think it's worth the money, personally, but i don't remember seeing car seats.
i go with a friend, we often split the food etc packs between us. funnily enough, she's never offered to split the membership fee...

littlemissbossy · 04/01/2007 22:59

I go, so do my parents... reasonably regularly. I too buy provisions - meat, bread, etc although don't buy massive packs of everything - don't have the storage space TBH. Have also bought electrical items, toys, books, PS games etc. Stock changes so I suggest you call them to see if they have any car seats in stock - can't remember seeing them before - but that's the aisle I generally avoid. HTH

peegeeweegee · 05/01/2007 10:10

They don't stock carseats on a regular basis, but I do recall recently seeing a huge pile of Britax boosterseats...

They also sell the Maclaren Techno Classic for just over £100 incl. VAT

We go once a month, stock up on toiletroll, bottles of sparling water etc.
We buy the big packs of chicken etc and I split the packs into portions and freeze them.

They also do the huuuuugest, tastiest birthday cakes which you can have personalised (advance order) for only £10 - perfect for those kiddies party where you have 20 little guests!!

The best thing about going to Costco is the 'taster' stalls - we walk round munching on all sorts!!

piglit · 05/01/2007 10:12

I think costco is great and I used to go a lot. I just wish we had one near us.

The food is excellent as well.

Freckle · 05/01/2007 14:06

Just been to the one at Lakeside today. They had booster seats and ones for younger children. I think there was only one style in each model though. And sorry, I didn't look at the price.

dyzzidi · 05/01/2007 14:12

We use Costco quite a lot and find them cheaper. We also use Macro. Costco is cheaper but Macro has more 'brand' variety. Also Macro is free to join.

I definately save at these places and tend to buy things like Nappies, toilet rolls, etc.

PrettyCandles · 05/01/2007 14:26

Costco rocks! I love it and the stuff is always good quality, unlike Macro which can be unknown brands.

I loved not having to lug bulky/heavy stuff home from Tescos - we would buy 6m to 1y-worth of loo roll, kitchen roll, laundry powder, tinned food, tinfoil etc in one Costco trip. But even if you don't have storage space Costco is definitely worth a visit wiuth a card-holder.

Their bakery goods are great!

They don't have a range of car seats, only ever a few models at a time, butthry do do a lot of electricals. You wont get any after-sales service from them, but they have never to my knowledge refused any returns. They don't AFAIK do telephne querire, and their stock varies a lot, you can't aleways predict what they'll carry.

lizziemun · 05/01/2007 15:44

PrettyCandles

Is their meat any good, as i going with my sister tomorrow as she has a card and needs to get her bits for work.

what other bit are good value to buy.

mummyhill · 05/01/2007 16:30

The meat is great and they do 100% breast chicken nuggets which my kids love.

expatinscotland · 05/01/2007 16:32

Their washing powder is fab, too.

and you can reuse the pail it comes in for all sorts of things.

We have one for washing the car, DH used a few to get some herbs growing for the ILs and his sister's big balcony, kid's toys, etc.

Whizzz · 05/01/2007 16:38

They usually do have a couple of car seats - but only 1 or 2 types. LCD TVs yes.

Costco tend to have fewer models/ types of stuff, but they will be the top end of the market whereas somewhere like MAkro - tends to stock more lines & go for the cheaper end of the ranges

marymillington · 05/01/2007 16:42

great bakery too. and good cheap babywipes, not too much gunk in them, no parabens.

the drawback is that you always end up buying loads of stuff you never realised you needed or wanted because it is such a bargain.

dh keeps coming back with bricks of halloumi, which we rarely eat. at least it has a half-life of a 10,000 years.

Twinkie1 · 05/01/2007 16:47

Tesco have great bargains on TVs at the moment - you have to get LCD if under 32 inch apparently but over and better to get plasma - you can tell I been researching it can't you!!

Costco is cool - DH wants me to go and get him a wine fridge this week!! I will also get salmon, smoked haddock, steak, chicken breasts, wine, beer, crisps for the kids, squash and cans of drink, mozzarella cheese, baby bels, parma ham, kitchen roll, loo roll, dishwasher tabs and washing powder and conditioner - god I could go on and on - I think it is worth it - only go if you flush though as you always end up spending loads - I have never seen car seats int he one near us though!!

Freckle · 05/01/2007 16:58

Actually, Asda have a 28" colour tv for £100 at the moment.
