witch steamer?

i want to buy a steamer cause i want to go on a health kick, are they any good? what can u cook in them? wich ones are good thanks xxxxx

I just use a cheap bamboo one from a Chinese supermarket. Steam broccoli, green beans, carrots, cabbage - I suppose veg you'd grow in your garden but not root veg.

I've got one that goes in the micro, some water in the bottom one, with potatoes and other veggies on the top, It works a treat.

Think I got it at lakeland, but am not sure - had it for about 10 years.

IMO I wouldn't buy a big electric one. Take up alot of space either on work top or in cupboard,

I think that I have also seen micro ones in Woolies

Oh dear aren't we mean, Nikcola. Don't mind us, happens to everyone. I've got one of those cheapy 2-tier metal steamers and it is great. I've tried the bamboo ones and I find them harder to clean (especially if you want to steam fish or Chinese dumplings, in which case you should put a lettuce leaf on the base of the steamer first - not so important with the metal ones). I also steam fish using a metal steam-tray in a wok with the lid on. In fact, come to think of it, I seem to do a lot of steaming!

I use a cheapy foldy thing that goes in the pot, but you need a pot with a decent lid.

I'm not adventurous -- steam broccoli mainly, but it's really good like that.

I wouldn't have a clue about eating anything healthy nikcola, let alone how to cook it - so you can get your own back when you are fit and healthy and I am a wrinkled old crone (she says, hastily checking spelling!!!)

I agree with kalex about not buying an electric one. My mum got one, but tbh it was just another thing cluttering up the kitchen surfaces, or unused at the back of some cupboard, so I got rid of it.

We use a traditional metal steamer that fits on top of all sorts of different sized pans. That way we can steam veg on top of pasta or rice or potatoes cooking in the pan below.

I had an electric steamer and it was a pile of pants. Gave it to the mil and brought a traditional metal steamer. Much better and the mil happy. What more could you ask for??

I've had a stainless steel steamer for years and love, love, love it. Mine has two inserts as well as the pan thing they go into, similar to this . It's one of my best buys ever and I reckon I use it most days of the week.
