does a kitchen bin really need to cost about £60?

we need a new bin, dh likes the ones with a touch opening lid by brabantia but they are so expensive, anyone ever come across a cheaper alternative?

Yes, all the supermarkets have similar for loads less, hang on

WideWebWitch · 01/01/2007 14:01

same capacity, half the price

foxinsocks · 01/01/2007 14:01

you can get the shiny ones in Homebase and places like that (or the supermarkets like www says)

but after one or two of those died on us, we now have a mucho cheapo giant plastic one (v similar in style to the brabantia one but plastic) and it is FAR easier to clean and doesn't go all rusty and nasty.

Some at Argos - look similar to the brabantia, though not touch opening, just pedal.

WideWebWitch · 01/01/2007 14:01

and another, twenty quid!

ediemcreedie · 01/01/2007 14:02

Get one that goes in a cupboard. Better imo.

More here , and here .

i do like the idea of a cupboard one as ds does keep sticking his hands in it and dropping toys etc.

thanks for the tesco link www, i didn't think to check the supermarket web sites!

we have a difference of opinion here on size, dh wants a 50L, but i don't mind smaller as it should really be emptied every day otherwise it smells.

you know what men are like, size matters etc...

Who wants their bin on show?
And yes to regular emptying.

rhubarbcat · 01/01/2007 16:20

I have a brabantia bin and its very annoying - often have to slam it about 20 times before the lid shuts. Once I got so mad with it I stuck the lid down with parceltape! This is the 2nd lid - the first one split (probably from too much slamming).

WeWishUAMerryXmasNANappyNewYr · 01/01/2007 16:22

dunno how much shipping would be but look here bin

motherinferior · 01/01/2007 16:22

We have a repulsive plastic one I think my ex bought (he moved out in 1995, I think) and which when I look closely has bits falling off it.

But it didn't cost £60.

mumfor1standfinaltime · 01/01/2007 16:22

Don't buy a stainless steel bin, you will be forever polishing it to keep it shiny! I HATE mine, and recently ds broke the lid. It is now sitting in the broom cupboard, lidless and I can't be bothered to replace it.
I would certainly not pay more than £20 for one!

WeWishUAMerryXmasNANappyNewYr · 01/01/2007 16:27

there's also this
the brabantia ones are only £50 on amazon.

WeWishUAMerryXmasNANappyNewYr · 01/01/2007 16:31

i would get a matt stainless steel one personally though...

HarkTheAEROdAngelsSing · 01/01/2007 17:05

We have something like this in matt stainless steel, bought from Ikea several years ago. You wouldn't necessarily have to use these for recycling. You can choose your size too. Ours cost about £12 then!! Little chance of that now though.

NannyL · 01/01/2007 17:58

have a brabantia one at work and i hate it

the lid gets really manky and smelly and its a nightmare to keep clean

a very good freind of mine got a similar one from homebase with a foot pedal as well for half (or even less) of the price of a brabantia one.

My favourite bin is my plastic one from asda for less than a tenner... its so easy to keep spotlessly clean!
