Has anyone else walked into their child's room and just wanted to sell everything except the books, brio, blocks and crayons?

Ds's room is totally full of stuff and he's not even 4 yet. Most of it has been purchased by grandparents during their many trips here. It's all got a place (except Christmas stuff) so it's not a tidiness issue. It's just that I don't think anybody needs all that stuff.

I'm just finding stuff and thinking. "Seriously what is point of this? Is his life enriched by having it? NO"

Totally agree.

But I'd like to get rid of the crayons too. I'm fed up with chasing a toddler armed with a crayon around the house and scrubbing scribbles off the floor. It doesn't matter where I hide them, he always manages to find one.

And he's far more interested in electrical sockets, the vaccuum cleaner and shoes/ socks than the vast pile of toys we have.

we actually have a whole room in the barn stuffed with toys. utterly utterly ridiculous.

can u suggest that he finds 5 (or more) things that he doesn't play with all that often to give to children who haven't got any toys ie charity shop/womens refuge

or can u donate to local toddler group with ur DS's say so of course

nutcracker · 01/01/2007 22:04

Yep, I would love to get rid of all of Ds's Spiderman and Batman stuff.

He was first introduced to it by my brother and now has all the figures etc etc and it pees me off. He is 4, he should like little animals and Bob the builder.

NappiesGalore · 01/01/2007 22:13

know where youre coming from nutty - mine are 3 and under but b/c they have an almost 7yo brother (my dps from prev marriage) its all power rangers this and yu-gi-oh that [grrr]

tis a good suggestion mumofmonsters. think id do better just siphoning off unused but still good quality toys myself rather than asking... out of sight and all that...

rhubarbcat · 01/01/2007 23:28

Every now and then when dd is at school I go in her room and anything I reckon she doesn't play with I remove to the bottom of my wardrobe. I keep it there out of sight for a couple of months - if it isn't asked for then it goes to the charity shop.

nikkie · 02/01/2007 21:23

We have cleared out the dressing up stuff today (outgrown ones will go to dds ole playschool)

I have loads of brio/farm/dinosaurs in the loft dd2 not interested anymore (only plays with fairies and Dr who stuff) and can't bring myself to get rid of it as I want more kids and would have to re buy it!

NorksBride · 02/01/2007 21:51

I'm long overdue a big clearout. It's so daunting though. The 3 DCs (aged 2, 3 & 5) have so much stuff it's obscene. It probably doesn't help that they're so close in age, you tend to get lots of duplicates. The younger sibs never want 'age appropriate toys', my 2yo DD for example is extremely accomplished with Magnetix & Polly Pocket!

I should get the FLY girls to bully me into doing it!

misdee · 02/01/2007 21:53

my kids have far too much. it wasnt that obvious at the old house as they had storage in their bedroom to keep it all in, but now its all over the place as their room is small.

expatinscotland · 02/01/2007 21:53

I got rid of a bunch of stuff they've outgrown this past week.

Skribble · 02/01/2007 21:54

We did quite a big clearout before Christmas, the only way I managed it was by getting the kids to pack up things to go into the loft for a while, so they didn't have to worry about parting with it. They actually choose quite a lot to go to charity or to sell. I will give it a while then I will sell on or donate the stuff from the loft they haven't benn looking for.

They really don't have that much, just small rooms. STuff like the duplo and wooden tracks were all second hand in the first place so I definatly don't think of them as spoiled.

BaileysMilkshake · 02/01/2007 22:14

Me - I do, have tried storage, but she now has a room full of bins and baskets and crates all over flowing.

Have tried hiding it in boxes under the bed, but she puls these out and I end up with a huge mess to clear up and sort out.

I am planning an huge clearout on e-bay, but that will mainly be pink clohes from DD as DC 2 was a boy.

My problem is most of DD's rubbish toys (plastic crap) that are'nt from us (me and DH) are from family, and I stupidly revealed my e-bay ID to IL's so now they montor what I am up to!

Would also feel a bit bad I suppose a she's quite good at ebtertaining heself with them and we love to listen to her role play with them. It's just the constant mess I hate!
