Had a beautiful, fantastic new bathroom fitted in May, but at the area of the bath where my shower is, I can see mildew forming. How can I get rid of it, bathrrom cost megabucks, dont want it looking grotty already.

yes you can get mildew remover; mine is from Lakeland, made by HG

you MUST keep the bathroom ventilated at all times- if you have an extractor fan, use it much more than you do already. Prop the bathroom door wide open when not in use. Remove excess water from the tiles and shower screen with a squeegee after a shower, then wipe down the mildewy bit. Keep the bathroom warm- it will help water to evaporate

(I'm a bit of a mildew expert )

i have the exact same problem as you tiredemma .. new bathroom and shower fitted at that time too!
In my old flat i never had this problem, so yes, must be this bathroom is not as warm, and i there isn't an extractor fan.

I do have Dettox anti-bacterial mould and mildew remover .. so i will go and use it now .. and tell you if it's worked .. in a bit

Nope, it didn't work .. so don't buy!!
I did ask dh last week if he could re-do the sealant .. that's not too much trouble

GoodKingWestCountryLass · 30/12/2006 11:15

Use dilute solution of bleach and water

vitomum · 30/12/2006 11:18

IME the mildew remover didn't work till i left in on ALL night. I think they advise a few minutes on the bottle which was woefully inadequate.

You can't ever get mildew off silicone sealant but the commercial sprays are brilliant for other surfaces, like that pinkish stain you get on grout.

tiredemma · 30/12/2006 11:44

there is no mildew on the sealant, just on the tiles and grout, also get that pinkish stain too. Dp is on a mission today to find some stuff and make the bathroom look gleaming again.

I found in my previous (very mildewy old) house, that plain old fashiohed bleach worked best.
i tried a few of the branded mildew removers but they didnt work very well.

southeastastra · 30/12/2006 11:45

try bleach! (a little to test) but i use that alot to get rid of mildew

JanH · 30/12/2006 11:51

The active ingredient of the mildew removers is chlorine bleach, it's just easier to use in a spray - you could make up a dilute solution and put that in a rinsed-out old spray bottle (label what's in it if you do that though )

tiredemma · 30/12/2006 11:57

Im scared that the bleach will discolour my tiles ( the are like 'sandstone'- think 'Roman baths'!!!!)

OP posts:
JanH · 30/12/2006 11:59

Ohhh - you mean unglazed? Did you get care instructions with them?

tiredemma · 30/12/2006 12:07

eeeer, cant remember

do remember the plumber however kind of 'sealing' them with some kind of glaze which still gave the tiles their 'sandy' look ( its very hard explaining this!!!)

southeastastra · 30/12/2006 12:13

i imagine they would be sealed if they were in the bathroom, but can you test bleach on a small unseen area?
