Having a dilemma - need to get a bed for 2 year old as new baby will need the cot

Do I get a full size single or a junior bed?
Any idea how long a junior bed is likely to last?

DS2 just 2 is in a single, and has been for a long time.

Seona1973 · 17/12/2006 21:39

my dd is also in a full sized single bed. It was a guest bed we already had and meant we didnt have to buy a new one for her. I think the junior beds only do till about the age of 5 or something

Ellaroo · 17/12/2006 21:41

A junior bed would mean having to buy different size mattress/sheets etc so ends up being quite an expensive option. Would definitely go for a full-size single.

Bladee · 17/12/2006 21:42

single definitely

Posey · 17/12/2006 21:43

Don't really see the point of junior beds. Waste of money imo!!

TheBlonde · 17/12/2006 21:49

Thanks, i was all set on the full size until DH saw the jnr ones in ikea.

single def.
my dd is out of her toddler bed and into a single bed already and she's not even 3.

It was worth it at the time imo as we moved her out of her cot at 15 months in prep for new baby - but by age 2 (s)he'll be fine in a bed, just buy a bed guard.

hana · 17/12/2006 22:11

it depends on who else will use the junior beds like younger silibings!
dd1 has been in an ikea junior bed for the past 4 years, dd2 is about to have it and then dd3 will have her turn! so ours hasn't been a waste of money

amazonianwoman · 18/12/2006 11:10

Single bed, junior beds just mean buying extra sets of bedding.

DD went from cot to single at 2.3 with no probs, and she loves it

twickersmum · 18/12/2006 16:31

i just used the cot fitted sheets and a cot size quilt for the junior bed, didn't buy extra bedding

dabihp · 18/12/2006 16:34

DO NOT BUY A TODDLER BED!!

YOU WILL LIVE TO REGRET IT!!!

Picture the scene... 3:43 the bedroom door creaks... dd/ds is cryign wants to come into your bed, sprawls out... no room for you and dh so one of you has to go into dd/ds bed... half a nights sleep on a four foot bed is not ggood!!

or dd/ds is sick/tired/whingey, wants you to get into their bed to give them hug... both of u iin a four foot bed.... argfhhghghghghghg

get a full sized one!!

TheBlonde · 18/12/2006 17:33

dabihp - Thanks, my DH will not be able to argue against that

If you haven't got much room or prefer the idea of a small bed there is a compromise at Ikea or Mothercare - we have an extending bed from Aspace - it's on the small size at the mo for about up to age 5 or 6 depending on child size. It's 2' 6" wide, and on small size cot-bed sheets etc fit it. Fully extended it is a single bed. Only downside is that it is low to the ground which may be an issue for much older kids. (You can fit the height of one of those small roll-under plastic storage boxes under it - we have 2 at 14cm high)

Mothercare] ink{http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?storeId=7&catalogId=10103&langId=-20&topcategoryId=15567&parentCats=155671618016182&categoryId=16182&cattype=subIkea

Aspace

Oh lordy, not sure what happened with the links - just search beds on Ikea and Mothercare!!!

tommysmama · 27/12/2006 02:39

my son is nearly 2 and i have just moved him into a junior bed - was quite pricey but is very nice. I think it will last a while as i can lie down in it and my feet are only just at the end.

I think it is better than a full size single as it is closer to the ground so if he falls out he'll be fine.
