0.5 tog vs. 1 tog Grobags

I know this topic has been covered lots before but I can't seem to find a thread covering this point.

Is there much difference between the 0.5 and the 1 tog grobags?

My ds' bedroom very warm (avg 22deg) as it's on the side of the house that gets sun all day (got up to 30deg last summer). He is currently in a 2.5 grobag which is just too warm. I was going to purchase the 0.5 rather than 1 tog, but wanted to know if anyone has got both and whether they are similar or if the 0.5 is actually better for the hot summer nights to come?

Thanks for your help.

Yep - DD & DS's rooms the same - have used 1 togs for the past month, 0.5s last night and from here on in I think. 1 togs would have been too hot last night (22av). HTH

Thanks Bear. Is it worth having the 1 tog as well or can you do without and just dress baby up more?

I'm a sucker for following instructions and not reading between the lines ("buy more of our stuff you muppet", so we have all togs in all sizes, but I do think the 1 togs have been useful this spring and they were last Autumn, when DD would have woken being too cold in a 0.5 tog, but would have been sweltering in a 2.5. However, I guess we could have adjusted clothing. Sorry, I'm not much help.

Hi Karen!

Last night it was 24deg in ds' room and he was in a 1 tog bag with shortie PJs and no vest/bodysuit.

The .5 tog bags are just a really thin cotton sheet with a zip - the 1 togs are a good in-between option.

TBH I use the .5 ones on the hottest nights just as part of ds' routine. Temperature-wise he might not need it but he's being zipped up into his bag as usual - he would ask for it now anyway

The other good thing about the .5 one is that it has poppers to extend it - ds is in the same one he had last summer at 9/10 mths and now he's a massive boy at 20mths.

After all the waffle - I think the 1 togs are good for hot nights and the .5 togs are for hot daytime naps or really tropical evenings.

i just got mine today - 0.5tog
good job as DS's room is 25 degrees tonight!

elliott · 18/05/2004 20:13

How did you manage that?? ds2's room is only 20 degrees - maybe its the Heaton microclimate! (He's in his 1.0 tog but still with vest and sleepsuit....hope he doesn't roast!)

muddaofsuburbia · 18/05/2004 20:13

26 deg here! (SE)

elliott · 18/05/2004 20:16

Re the 0.5/1.0 tog debate - I agree with MoS - generally use the 1.0 tog over summer and the 0.5 only for naps and overseas holidays - just to have the same routine really.
Ds1 is now finally out of grobags! (He's nearly 2.5 and just getting too big for the 6-18 month size!)

tillymint · 18/05/2004 21:40

27 degrees in dd2's room tonight.
1 tog with shorty sleepsuit, no vest. Windoiw open and air cooler on.
Hot Hot Hot!

popsycal · 18/05/2004 21:42

hmmm am thinking mayve a i ought to have got the 1 tog...????
still i can add clothing if necessary

madgirl · 18/05/2004 22:00

to echo the comment earlier, i know there is a thread on this s/where, but seeing as you are all grobag experts.... i am expecting ds/dd on july 9th and wondered when you can/should start to use a growbag- is there a sensible age to start? ds was in one from 12 months, that was because he started throwing covers off, i would have used one before, but i hadn't come across them. what do you think about babies?

muddaofsuburbia · 18/05/2004 22:06

Madgirl - Grobag make sleeping bags for babies from 7lbs and up. Ds was in a grobag from about 3 weeks - they hadn't invented the 7lbs and up one so he went straight into the 10lbs and up.

The ones for young babies unzip all the way round so you don't have to take the whole thing off if you need to change a nappy in the middle of the night.

Grobag's information about ages and sizing is here . I imagine it would apply to other makes of sleeping bag too.

karen99 · 19/05/2004 07:23

Thanks for all your advice. Decided to order the 0.5 tog as it really is warm down here (SE) and vary his pj's accordingly.

Agree with MoS, madgirl. DS only went in one around 4mo, but if and when a second comes along he/she'll be in it from birth. Maybe continue with swaddling in those early days until they reach the 10lb mark (we don't have any of the tiny bags, but then again my ds was 8lb14 so it wasn't long till he reached the bag starting limit!)

florenceuk · 19/05/2004 10:23

DS refuses to let me change his Maisy bag at the moment - even though it is the 2.5tog one...

elliott · 19/05/2004 21:12

I started using grobags at about 6 weeks with both mine - at the beginning I think its nicer to try to swaddle them (I was never very good at it....)

Hulababy · 19/05/2004 21:13

My DD went in one once she reached 10lbs - aged about 6-8 weeks I think. They didn't do the newborn one at the time or I would have got one straight away.

madgirl · 19/05/2004 22:28

thanks all, think i will wait until baby is born, and then see what temperature is like, no point buying one at 0.5 tog if we end up with a pants summer (actually i'll be quite relieved) and it'll be a real waste of money. i think i will get him/her into one almost immediately. i didn't swaddle ds- everyone on this thread seems to be all for it....did you all use a blanket or a sheet or what?

karen99 · 21/05/2004 16:54

Hi Madgirl, just checking in on this thread again, sorry, missed your question.

My ds was born last summer and it was soooooo hot. He started off in a thin cellular blanket but that became too hot and he ended up in a v. thin cotton sheet. Funnily enough it was about the same thickness or slightly thinner than the 0.5 bag I've just bought. The nice thing about swaddling is it makes them feel really snug & womb-like and if they suffer from the startle reflex quite alot swaddling is a godsend. So I may start with swaddle again and move into the grobag once the reflex settles (around 12wks with my ds). If you search for swaddling under SLEEP you'll find some links on how to do it. HTH

madgirl · 23/05/2004 13:41

thanks for coming back on that karen99. good plan! will start with swaddling, and will use appropriate blanket/sheet according to the weather and then go onto a grobag.
