Help!!

We are in desperate need of a new kitchen, and are on a real budget.
Dh is very keen on the look of the ikea Varde freestanding kitchen. (sorry, can't do clever things like linky)

Does anyone have this kitchen or know anyone who has this kitchen?
Is it solid?
Is it easy to clean?
Do you / they like it?
Is it too modern for our Victorian property which is mainly furnished with junk shop finds and other old assorted bits of furniture...

I really really could do with some input here - thanks so very much in advance!!

I've looked at it instore and it seems pretty solid. Personally i like the free-stnding look, my friend has the Habitat version(more expensive) and it looks good, her house sounds similar to yours.

Thanks fox, and thanks for doing the linky...

Am leaning more and more towards it, especialy if I keep all my old fashioned and oddly assorted kitchen accesories....

Anyone else?? Please??

I love this kitchen. But i dont think it'd work for us, as we have a bit of wall that juts out, so is at 2 different angles (hard to explain!). Also, I dont remeber seeing any corner units, but maybe I just didnt look very hard? It'd be a bit of a space waster if they dont have corner ones!

SchneeBallFight · 13/12/2006 11:50

dont have one so cant tell you but I think it looks lovely and not too modern for a victorian house.

foxtrottothefestivegrotto · 13/12/2006 11:53

They do a corner unit.

MrsBadger · 13/12/2006 12:04

it is very nice looking (we stroked it when last in Ikea and planning new kitchen), and I think it'd probably be more appropriate (and cheaper) than a fully-fitted shiny 'period-style' kitchen if the rest of the house is eclectically furnished.

It does have a corner unit but I still think it could be a real spacewaster if you have a kitchen on the smaller side and/or need lots of storage - all those overhanging worktops etc...

peegeeinapeartree · 13/12/2006 13:03

Mrs Badger, you have hit the nail on the heat - am worried about a fitted period style kitchen as that to me is a bit of a contradiction in terms...

They do a corner unit, but it is huge, not suitable for our corner.
Our kitchen is 4.85m x 2.65m, so not huge, and with a low ceiling, so I don't want wall cupboars as they would nudge the ceiling and make it look even lower.

I think I will tell hubby it is the one to go for - and persuade him to take me to Ikea to 'stroke' some units

Thanks for all your help!!

Thanks for this discussion as we're also contemplating the same and poss in older house (poss as not moved yet iyswim). I thought free-standingness of it all would mean it fit in with period property although with a modern twist!

Jesus, what am I on about?

MerryPiffmas · 13/12/2006 13:13

I covet this kitchen

peegeeinapeartree · 13/12/2006 16:02

Walnutshell - I get what you are on about, I am in that exact same place!!

Also, my kitchen is 3.5m, NOT 4.85m (I wish....)

I think it is time to get the measuring tape out and start planning and pricing it up....

Whilst we are on kitchens - what is the general consensus re: wall tiles - are they unfashionable now? We need to remove the current tiles and don't know whether to re-tile or do something else.....
DH wants a sheet of stainless steel behind the cooker as a splashback, but again am worried about the modern-ness of it all....
Aargh, kitchen designers, step this way...
