i've always managed in both with no problems. Not sure if there is a difference to be honest.

If you´re going to have a choice, I would say choose gas, but I´ve got a leccy one which is fine once you get used to its little foibles....

If you´re using electric, the best thing to do is to buy an oven thermometer to make sure you´re at the right temp. Mine seems to get over hot, so always have to knock about 20-30 degrees off the time suggested in the recipe, or the sodding things burn on the top.

personally i prefer a gas hob and electric oven!

al the elec ovens i use make fab cakes!

CountTo10LordsaLeaping · 06/12/2006 21:46

I've used both and prefer gas but once you get used to electric, temps and positioning etc, it doesn't make a huge amount of difference.

I prefer gas for making a moister cake - HOWEVER if you put a bowl/pan of hot water at the bottom of the electric oven whilst the cake is cooking, it makes for a moister cake as well!

Thanks very much for all responses

I am wildly entertaining the possibility of getting a new one installed by Christmas, paying for it in installments - electric would be cheaper because apparently we wouldn't have to pay a qualified fitter to instal it for us...and personally after having been subjected to carbon monoxide poisoning while pregnant by a dodgy lying landlord in the past, I am attracted to the clean/safe image of the electric one. But people keep telling me that I can't cook decent cakes in an electric one, which would be a bit of a downer as I am a sugarcraft fiend

You can cook decent cakes in an electric oven, provided you buy a decent oven. Its worth seeking advice.

MIL cooks fantastic cakes and has never had a gas oven. She used to make cakes professionally too.

IME the best thing is to know thine oven.
If it has hot or cold spots, what its recovery time is and what its average temperature range really is

NotQuiteCockney · 07/12/2006 08:45

I'm very happy with my new electric fan oven. The fan bit makes a real difference, ime.

Apparently, although I'm not exactly sure where this is from, most professional chefs like electric ovens and gas hobs. But, as I said, I might have dreamt that.

ParanoidSurreyHousewife · 07/12/2006 09:07

Presumably most people have one or the other? I'm now imagining all these women with huge kitchens, debating whether to cook in the gas, the electric or the aga...
