Number plate registration cons?

emilyphipps · 11/10/2015 11:10

I am buying a new car through Carwow. The dealer who I have spoken to a lot insists it is NOT a pre registered car and has given me the number so I can get insurance. It is 65 the new one from September. BUT the DVLA has no knowledge of the number nor do insurance websites etc. Also the number is not in the immediate area of the car - how does this work?

Am I being conned or is it that I am so sick of the lies of car dealers etc that I am being too cautious?!

Why would you be being conned? The fact that the DVLA and insurance websites (which use the DVLA database) don't know about the reg number means it hasn't already been registered, it backs up what the dealer is saying. If it was pre-registered, the DVLA would know about the reg number.

A dealer will get an allocation of registrations from the DVLA and will pick the next in line when they complete the form to register your vehicle with the DVLA. The DVLA will then know about it (after whatever period of time it takes to process the paperwork).

the number is not in the immediate area of the car

What do you mean?

LittleBearPad · 11/10/2015 18:24

If it was pre-reg the number would be known to the dvla. I'm not sure what you are worrying about.

Also number plates don't really have much to do with areas.

Thanks for advice. Dealer says they have done the paperwork but DVLA doesn't have knowledge of this . I thought one registered the car based on where the dealer was thus the code. For example L London codes are not normally issued in Brighton etc.

I have been conned before by a car dealer (what a surprise!) and as this one has arleady lied to me I am inevitably sceptical.

How has this dealer lied to you?

emilyphipps · 12/10/2015 13:05

Lied around delivery dates, when he would contact me, tried to get out of what was agreed on carwow - usual stuff.

I don't know the timeframe, but the DVLA are not known for their promptness in administration. Updating the registration lookup database is probably done on biweekly or monthly schedules, I would guess.

You're buying through a broker, they're going to source it from whichever dealer gives them the best price.

As Perfectlypurple asked, how have you been lied to?

Cross post.

I obviously can't comment fully as we don't have the full information, but if you're using Carwow I'm guessing you did so to get the cheapest possibly price. In doing so, Carwow will get the cheapest possible price out of the dealer, a bit of a cut for them doing the legwork, the dealer is getting the bare minimum of margin - they're not going to be bothered about going the extra mile for you as they'll be getting very little on the sale.

The cheapest price and the best service don't usually go together for a given product. You can't have it both ways.
