we live in a hard water area, and loo's here tend to get a build up of sclae in them in water bit at teh bottom which looks horrible. the loo gets cleaned regularly, but looks like i dont bother cos of the scale. can anyone recommend anything to get it looks white again without resorting to harsh chemicals too often.

I'd like to know the answer to this too. I have to resort to putting Blue loo down the loo at the mo because it looks awful.
I did get some limescale tablets which you leave down the loo overnight. They did work, but only in the little area that the tablet had been sitting in.

i've tried those tablets too. useless arent they. i even put 3 down once to try and clear it. waste of cash imo. I use bloo as well to hide the state of my loo.

When it gets bad I resort to rubber gloves, a knife and lots of elbow grease. I keep meaning to try something like a kettle descaler, but don't know what the consquences would be!

Nutcracker · 12/05/2004 17:32

I was tempted to put the whole lot down Misdee, but was worried i'd blow the loo up or something

hmb · 12/05/2004 17:36

Kettle descaler would work, but make sure that you don't add anything else chemical to the mix, eg bleach, or you could end up releasing chlorine, which is not a good idea!

Try limelite, it is good

pickledbeetle · 12/05/2004 17:52

Try these

  1. denture cleaning tablets left in bowl overnight
  2. Can of cola round and into toilet bowl. Leave for an hour and clean.
  3. Empty toilet bowl of water, cover limescale with thick paste of laundry borax & vinegar, leave for a couple of hours.

All taken from "How clean is your house?"

harpic do a product in a blue plastic container (called something like toilet descaler or simmilar name, basically it gets rid of this sort of deposits)you'd find it in the supermarkets. we get marks on the back of the loo (wher the water comes down from the cistern) so it's too bad, but still these are visible marks and this product does the job and they just dissapear. i have no idea if it would resolve a bigger problem but it's not expensive so worth a try.

Unfortunately sometimes only harsh chemicals work. A good slurp of spirits of salts left to work for a few minutes will shift anything. But wear gloves, be careful and don't inhale the fumes. It's very concentrated and will burn badly if you splash it on yourself.

Caroline5 · 12/05/2004 18:34

sorry pickledbeetle, I tried 1 and 2 on your list a while ago and they did not work! Denture tablets had no noticeable effect and cola actually turned toilet brown!! Perhaps I left it too long. It did scrub off with the loo brush though but otherwise no effect.

Haven't tried no 3 yet...!Would like a miracle cure Janstar, what is spirit of salts?

noddy5 · 12/05/2004 19:06

a whole bottle of thick bleach left overnight or ariel liquid down there for a few hours

mieow · 12/05/2004 19:11

Misdee, as we live in the same hard water area, I will let into a secret, have you noticed my toilet is sparkly and clean?? Well what I do is push as much as the water away with the loo brush and use Harpic 100% limescale remover, leave for a few hours and then scrub away. It works

gloworm · 12/05/2004 20:36

empty loo off all water, pour in a bottle of white vinegar, leave for as long as possible, scrub, and hey presto limescale is gone.
dh did this on our toilet yesterday (and also did kettle ) both are pretty lime-free now!

Furball · 12/05/2004 20:56

If you manage to get rid of it - Use Parazone toilet cistern tablet block thingys in your cistern and this keeps the water 'soft' so stops it reforming. I've tried others and even though they are a little more expensive, I've found them the best.

misdee · 12/05/2004 22:09

mieow i was going to let dad round with the spirits of salts or whatever it is, but as u have to leave it for a while and its harsh chemicals, which u know i hate and try to keep to a minimum (all we have is bleach and multi surface cleaner here) i havent gotton round to it. will pick up some harpic stuff tomorrow, and try that trick!

IT has to be the the harpic in the blue bottle

Caroline5 · 13/05/2004 19:40

Thanks for that tip mieow!
