7 year old car "eating" far too much oil, been told likely a write-off. Help!

We have a Mazda 5 Sport with an 08 plate which we've owned for four years and has 60,000 on the clock, one previous owner to us. I've only driven 25K in that time and I'm not an aggressive driver by any means (especially not with four DC usually in with me!) It's sailed through every MOT since we had it and we've had the bare minimum of repairs really. We always take it to a Mazda garage and have it serviced every year and taken good care of it. It's been a great car.

So imagine our surprise when I was told yesterday by the garage that it was most likely going to be a write-off as it had burned through a litre of oil in a week. We'd taken it in to get the aircon fixed last week, they topped up the oil. I drove 250 miles since then, brought it back to have more investigations done and there was barely any oil left. This, apparently, is a Very Bad Thing and means the piston rings are probably failing. Which seemed to surprise them just as much as me as it's such a young car with a low mileage.

They checked all over for leaks but it's apparently dry as a bone which means it has to be the engine burning it. I've been given instructions to check the oil once a week and see if it is going down. They said there is no point fixing the aircon (£700) if it's probably going to be a write-off. Sigh.

I couldn't see particularly blue smoke coming out the exhaust when I started it but what do I know? I never look at the exhaust. And clearly it had enough oil from March (when it was serviced) until last week when they topped it up or the engine would have seized or at least the oil light would have come on, right?

We've just moved house and mortgaged to the hilt and are still paying off costs related to moving so this could not have come at a worse time.

Anyway, I'm a software engineer not a car engineer so this is all new to me. Any thoughts or advice to what to do at this point very welcome. Are there things I can ask the garage to do? I'd have hoped they would have suggested stuff if there was, but still.

You could sell it via ebay with its faults listed as a spares or repairs. People buy them who can spend the time mending them then sell them on. Aa long as you are honest you can sell with a clear conscience.

Just shows Japanese cars are not all they are cracked up to be! I think Mazdas are a bit cheap feeling. My friend has a Mazda 6 - lots of gadgets but not well made and plasticky. There are better cars out there. Astros are pretty average too in my opinion. A car with good residuals is what you need. They are saleable and hold value for a reason. They are better cars.

It's worth a go on eBay I guess! Worth seeing if we can get more than the quoted amount elsewhere.

I've always had Volvos or VWs in the past (as did both our parents) - this was the first time we tried something different because at the time we couldn't afford much else that new. The Mazda does have a lot going for it - sliding doors, folding down seats, parking sensors and numerous other things that I'm finding don't come as standard elsewhere. And until now it had been very reliable! And it is a dark metallic purple (come on.. what's not to love??) I just can't believe something so major has (probably) gone!

We may well bite the bullet and go for a Volvo (XC90 maybe) next time and just not buy as new. The Mazda was three years old but there's no way we could afford a large Volvo of that age right now.

We borrowed a Volvo recently and although it was attractive inside we felt the build quality was more Ford than BMW. Ok, they are owned by Ford but it felt like a Ford with a Volvo badge. If you don't need too much space there are loads of used RR Evoques about. Surely some deals to be had. I am sure the car magazines will have lots of examples of good buys to replace your car. I never considered sliding doors as being desirable! Feels like a van. Parking sensors are great though. Most estates and hatchbacks have folding rear seats. I would look into running costs, residuals and desirability, mpg, servicing costs, space and ease of driving. I think I would see what other cars still look great after 7 years of age. It is disgraceful that a Mazda is a write off at that age. I bet every 7 year old Golf is still going ok!

We borrowed a Volvo recently ... Ok, they are owned by Ford ...

No they're not.

CrispyFB · 25/09/2015 17:41

We do need a lot of space though! There are six of us! I am not that fussed over something feeling like a van so long as it is practical. Sliding doors have been a lifesaver in terms of parking in car parks and trying to squeeze potentially clumsy children in and out of tight spaces (not to mention the shopping!)

We were always happy with our Volvos (both sets of parents have had many Volvos over the years too) so I don't think we'll regret it if we do go that way again!

Update -

A week later (two weeks after the last oil fill) and a few hundred miles and the oil level is still totally full. Given the garage claimed it got through ALL the oil after 250 miles and a week last time, this is somewhat at odds.

I really don't know what to think! It does seem like the garage has screwed up in some way, whether that's with the actual oil top-ups (bad record keeping/forgetting to actually do it or something) or knocking something accidentally which is now fixed I have no idea.

Obviously we'll leave it a while longer and we're still keen to get a second opinion when I can find the time, but it is all very weird. And we've totally lost trust in the garage Sad
