Can i park van/trailer outside my house

I want to start a mobile dog grooming business, but as my house hasno driveway I would have to park my trailer (which would attatch to my car when I need to go to a client) or my van (if I decide to get one instead) on the street outside my house.

We rent our house from a private company.

What are the rules on this?

You might need to check the terms of the rental agreement and see what it says (if anything) about allocated parking, and/or running a business from the property.

You can't leave a caravan on the public highway and I assume a grooming van would come under the same rules. A friend of mine has a dog grooming van, she has an arrangement with the local pub and pays to park it in their carpark.

We wouldnt be running a business on the property, the vehicle would be driven to the clients' home.

From the HC:

242
You MUST NOT leave your vehicle or trailer in a dangerous position or where it causes any unnecessary obstruction of the road.
Laws RTA 1988, sect 22 & CUR reg 103

So yes.

Also: www.askthe.police.uk/content/q629.htm

So yes, as long as the council don't tell you not to.

Basically be considerate, don't block the road or make it difficult to negotiate a junction and you should be OK.

I love how the internet allows people with no knowledge of a subject to publish completely erroneous information as though it were fact, especially when said internet also enables research with the minimum of effort.

Thanks!

No need to be such a bitch Mittens. Hmm

I know someone who was told by the council to move their caravan after numerous complaints and it was in no way causing an obstruction, nor was it dangerous. However he did live in a council house so maybe that's why he felt he had to do as told.

I wouldn't leave a caravan or trailer on the highway as Id be seriously worried about it being stolen.

Are you from the US Simon? Just you say 'highway' but its actually a very quiet street in a suburban area. Maybe I'm just stupid but highway brings to mind a busy road or motorway.

No english, I always thought that public highway was an english phrase?

The bloke I know who was told to move his caravan lived on a residential street, very quiet housing estate.

So pretty much as I said above? So yes, as long as the council don't tell you not to.

It matters because people believe what they read on the internet, and spreading misinformation is unhelpful, annoying and can be damaging. It's not like it's hard to google a subject to check your facts before posting.

Wheel clamp; tow bar hitch lock.

SoupDragon · 21/09/2015 09:17

I think you stand a very good chance of pissing off your neighbours if you take up a precious parking space with a trailer.

Which obviously isn't to say that you can't do it.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 22/09/2015 17:39

Well if you did a bit of googling Mittens you'd find plenty of caravanning forums where people with hitch locks and wheel locks have had their caravans stolen.

Hitch locks are useless if a thief comes with a trailer and drags it on the trailer which happens. Any wheel lock can be defeated with the right equipment. Whether you take the risk or not will depend on the area I guess.

I agree you'll piss your neighbours off no end.
