What;'s happened to granulated sugar?

I rarely use the stuff but bought a new bag a couple of weeks ago. Had visitors who take sugar in drinks and they queried the sugar 'is it caster?' they asked. Well I thought I'd made a mistake to bought another bag of granulated and it's just the same - very fine

????????????????????????

JT, you need to get out more

Have to say, I hadn't noticed any change...

Nemoinapeartree · 29/11/2006 13:11

I think its because in drinks the sugar can tend to lurk at the bottom but maybe with the caster being finer it mixes in????????

JoolsToo · 29/11/2006 13:15

but I didn't buy caster, it's granulated but it's weird.

You're dead right though I do need to get out more!

I have noticed too - it is finer - not as fine as caster but definately finer than it used to be - I normally buy the unrefined golden one but had to get an emergency bag in M&S and you are right it is not the same!!!

(But then I always agree with anything you say!!! )

WideWebWitch · 29/11/2006 13:26

No idea but I want to know why Tesco don't sell ANY French mustard anymore.

suedonim · 29/11/2006 16:28

I'm sorry to admit to having a sad life but I've noticed the same, JT.

I was faced with an ethical dilemma here in Lagos recently. The two choices of sugar were Brazilian sugar packed in Nigeria (they grow it here, why do they import it??) or Fair Trade from Malawi. The FT looked the job until I noticed it had been refined in the UK. What's a girl to choose?? In the end I went for the prettiest packet - the FT with a zebra on it.

Lucycat · 29/11/2006 16:33

no French mustard www?

email them demanding it! i did that with farfalline pasta and it miraculously reappeared

pointydog · 29/11/2006 16:52

Never mind you getting out more, jools, your visitors need to get out more. But not visiting you obviously. They queried the sugar, indeed.

JoolsToo · 29/11/2006 16:54

Actually it was ds2 (30) who noticed it first!

You're all doomed then

WhenSantaWentQuietlyMad · 29/11/2006 17:06

I need to get a life, but until I do, I thought I would agree and say that dh noted the difference in granulated sugar before I did. It seems to come with smaller grains now.

Is that the same difference as everyone else has noticed.

JoolsToo · 29/11/2006 17:08

let's all skip down to the funny farm together

at least we're observant!

I noticed too.

Some white granualted sugar seems to almost have icing suger woth the larger bits.

It looks rank.

I get the unrefined golden granulated stuff now because the white stuff looks soooooooooooo freaky.

egypt · 29/11/2006 17:44

i noticed the sugar thing too and wondered if i'd bought the wrong stuff! and havent found french mustard in tescos for ages either.

JoolsToo · 29/11/2006 17:58

I've bought two bloody bags of the stuff cos I thought I'd bought the wrong stuff and Ihardly use it!

In fact ds2 kept nudging me saying 'you've bought the slimmer stuff haven't you mum? eh? eh?'

I can't decide if this is just too sad for words, but have they changed the manufacture of it or something?

foxinsocks · 29/11/2006 20:10

where do you get your granulated sugar Jools?

I get ours in a sort of tub thing from sainsburys and it looks the same as it normally does (so a bit more gritty than caster sugar iyswim)

last time (I couldn't see any granulated) I got the sugar in cubes - those are really good and just like 'normal' granulated

JoolsToo · 29/11/2006 20:12

the first bag was Tate & Lyle the second was Whitworths.

It even looks a bit like salt!

Do you only use granulated sugar for tea/coffee?

I only bought it so my mum an ddad could put some in their tea/coffee and then I thought how foolish. And I give 'em caster now.

Or has granulated more uses than that?

JoolsToo · 29/11/2006 20:35

only for tea and coffee (for visitors) hence my 4lbs of sugar is going to see into the next millennium

OP posts:
pointydog · 29/11/2006 20:39

granulated sugar is a funny thing

JoolsToo · 29/11/2006 20:41

as are pointy dogs

foxinsocks · 29/11/2006 20:42

aah my tub is Silver Spoon (have just gone to look)

it seemed ok earlier but I'm now wondering if indeed it is different to the last tub

at this thread starting to make me doubt myself

JoolsToo · 29/11/2006 20:44

now you mention it I think my first one was Silver Spoon - they all look alike but it was in a bag not a tub.

I'm rather pleased with the interest I'm evoking in sugar ......
