DD has requested an Apple IMac for xmas, only £800!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Would you hand the expense and go get one? I know she would use it constantly and would serve her well in senior school, she is however only 11yrs old.

absolutely not. apart from anything else you could get a pc of similar spec for about 400 quid. why can't she just use the family computer?

She can and does use the family PC but she is after all the tricks the Apple IMac can do, ie. with photography etc (it has a built in camera). Her IT teacher said it is the cream of the crop. Sure I would love to get her one but DH earns the money and said it would be spoiling her. I do agree but at the same time, if you can afford it then why not, who knows what tomorrow brings for anyone.

omg £800 when she already has access to a computer??? I think it's totally INSANE. If she were 18 and starting a computer course at uni maybe, and even then, only maybe. 11 years old???? NO way.

tbh I think it's extraordinarily cheeky of her to have asked for it, and seems to suggest she has no idea of the cost or value of things.

Bloody hell, I wouldn't ask dh to spend that much on me. I also wouldn't consider it as a gift for all 3 of my kids put together. No way.

I know what you are saying ernest, but I don't think she is being cheeky at all. She was asked what would she like and she told us. I agree, she has no monetary value, the family is extremely wealthy but she does not recieve gifts at any other time of year except of course birthdays. On the oether side of the coin she has also asked for persmission to use MSN (that doesn't actually cost anything) or for one of those squishy cushions (a tenner I think)

here I am backing down, ha ha. I do think it's madness, but the only was I would consider something like that would be
a. not now but say a couple of years older
b. she had to save and contribute part of it
c. she had to work HARD to earn it in some way
d. maybe it'd be a good idea to introduce her to the idea of how much stuff costs, eeg getting her involved with the grocery shopping.

Money was actually really tight when I grew up, but even so, I had no idea of the value/cost of stuff because I was never involved in anything financial. Even tho I regularly helped mum witht he weekly shop I never knew how much it came to. I remember asking to boroow 5k (blush) having no idea at all that people didn't have this amount in their bank accounts as a gerneral rule. ANd like I said, we were relatively poor, but I was still clueless

a web cam plus an old version of photoshop costs about 40 quid btw.

I understand where you are coming from ernest, and I dare say if we as a familyy were not in such a fortunate financial position, I would perhaps have been horrified at the the thought of a child requested such a gift. Anyway, FWIW she will not be getting one. Just because Daddy can afford it, it means nothing. Yeah I would actually love to give it but common sense steps in big and strong. We are getting a karaoke machine and a tailors dummie (both on her wish list) she wants to be a fashion designer. Hey ho, hope she makes it!
