My living room is so tiny that I've wondered if I could put a TV up over the fireplace and have another sofa where TV is now.
All this in the hope that visitors don't have to come in relays over Christmas!
Has anyone done this, does it work well and look good?

We haven't done it but DH keeps saying that this is how TV is going to end up and our children will laugh when they look back to are huge boxes that used to take up the whole corner of the lounge! I think he might have a point.

I think if you are restricted for space it's def the way to go, go for it.

JoolsToo · 29/11/2006 10:26

Personally, I don't like the look as I don't like the tv to be dominant, but if you're short on space it seems the logical thing to do.

I am technologically challenged and DIY challenged so I'm proud of myself for even thinking of it!!
By the way I haven't got any money really, I was hoping if I sold the existing TV (and rather lovely cabinet it's hidden away in) it would go someway towards covering the costs.
Tell DH I think that soon TV will be 3D holograms in the living room, like those reconstructions on Bones!!

Would it have to be plasma panel to be unobtrusive, or are there any 'ordinary' TVs that are narrow enough?

I think wall mounted can look good, not sure about over mantlepiece, depends how much you love your tele I suppose!

If room is small, I'd say def. plasma/lcd, any other tv will be right out in room much too much if your room is tiny as you describe. Dunno about costs, but loads of offers atm. We wnated to wall mount, but couldn't get a configuration to work, so ended up having to get cabinet.

You should check out on internet recommended screen size vs distance from screen, help you choose right size

I want to wall mount above fireplace (not put our fire in yet mind)
It will free up more room for our two large sofas.
You can get brackets for normal tvs, but they do look a little sticky out

elliepmummy · 29/11/2006 17:44

We are in te process of doing this won a plasma tv at work and have bought a flat bracket and my dad is going to fix bracket up at weekend (he doesnt trust us to do it!) and then tv will go on wall. We have already moved furniture around ready for this and can't believe how big our lounge looks without having the tv in the corner. Be warned that the bracket has to fit either on an external wall or actually on the struts of a plasterboard wall we had to rearrange furniture so that we could fit to external wall and watch it!

Savings plan for next year is an LCD for our bedroom and the playroom (also stops DD standing to close to the TV when its on the wall!)

I think above the fireplace would make uncomrotable and distracting viewing with alll that benetah it..

I think it needs to be lowe5 and in very uncluttered space also have to organise a million cables

There is a flat TV you can get that looks just like a mirror in a gold frame when it is off, and would perhaps be less dominant in a small room / more in keeping over the fireplace But that is the limit of my knowledge - DH brought the brochure home in a pile when he was TV-fixated.
