how do I get wax crayon off a pine table?

Anyone have any ideas? The table is varnished not waxed, have tried bicarb and damp cloth, but the crayon is dark blue and the colour won't budge.

white spirit. 100% guaranteed! if worried, test it first on a little corner, but it really works.
also lots of furniture polish and a dry , clean soft cloth should shit it too

Branster · 11/05/2004 14:02

i'm really sorry, meant to type 'shif' it too

oh dear! the white spirirt should get it off instantly. did it not work? have you tried anything else? maybe i'm thinking of a different thing...hmmm

There's some stuff called "Goo Gone" which I bought from The Great Little Trading Company (dont have web address but should be reasonably easy to find). Its removed black crayon from a newly stripped, unvarnished pine door among other things. Brilliant stuff - £5.99 a bottle - well worth it.

gingerbear · 12/05/2004 13:35

I tried WD40 and that worked.
Think our lines were crossed Branster re- white spirit and 'shit' etc.

got this from the WD40 website (oh how sad am I?)

"I've heard that people use WD-40 as a cleaner/remover. What can it be used on?
WD-40 removes sap, tar, adhesives, labels and tape from surfaces without damaging existing paint. It's an effective cleaner for tools, equipment, and vehicles. Use it to remove splattered bugs from the front of cars. WD-40 will even help remove gum from carpet. Just spray, wait, and wipe with a clean cloth."

It's a wonder that Michelle from lakeland hasn't started to sell it.

good work gingerbread! i was actually getting a bit worried last night about your lovely pine table. good thing it's sorted now.

Twinkie · 12/05/2004 13:44

gingerbear - we have a black fire surround and a slate hearth and WD40 cleans it wonderfully - of course have to remember not to do it when the fire is burning !!!!

gingerbear · 12/05/2004 13:45

Branster, the table now looks like new - not only removed crayon, but coffee stains and general grime too.

Am v v happy bear

Think I am morphing into Michelle....

and even mumsnet says today on the homepage:
"Tip of the day

To get wax off a carpet get a brown paper bag, put over the offending mark, heat up your iron, then iron over the mark. It also removes wax crayons and chewing gum (bacardiandcoke)"
