idiot's question about sat nav - will it stop me killing her?

off to London and have to drive round the centre of it cos of crap disabled access on public transport/ toddler

will sat nav show me nicely round the city centre including all the scary bits with the one-way systems and the roundabouts?

or will it not be helpful so I end up with my mother turning the A to Z round and round in her hands and end up in Fulham again instead of the Science Museum? (true story)

well? only thinking of cheap one. Can drive all over the congestion charging area since we have a blue badge exemption btw

Yes, I find it better than my husband (at navigating only). Occasionally you may lose the signal in areas with tall buildings, although I haven't so far in any part of London I've driven in. I somtimes find that it doesn't tell me to keep right/left so that I end up in the wrong lane for my turning, but that doesn't happen very often. I have a Tom Tom One btw.

jampots · 27/11/2006 10:27

this is ours its excellent

Ellaroo · 27/11/2006 10:27

A friend of mine had one of these and thought it was wonderful - she has since lost it and gets horribly lost all the time.

NotQuiteCockney · 27/11/2006 10:28

We use ours a lot. I can probably do better with a map, but with the satnav, DH can get places on his own, and I don't have to get carsick peering at the map.

If you buy a new one, it will be up-to-date on the one-way system.

marthamoo · 27/11/2006 10:31

Love ours. We don't have anywhere near as many car rows since we got one. But it is at its 'weakest' in built-up areas, I find - you can miss turns quite easily when they are coming thick and fast (but it tells you and gets you back on track, obviously). And road works will throw it - going through Stoke recently (they have dug up pretty much all of Stoke) we just kept going round and round in circles as the road it wanted us to take just didn't exist any more.

Don't know about satnav (am a bit of a map fiend so haven't felt the need for satnav yet!) but if you want any directions round that side of town, then shout because I'm not bad around that part of London (and we drive round there a fair bit).

and lol at ending up in Fulham - it's actually not that difficult to take one or two wrong turnings and end up there!

Cappuccino · 27/11/2006 10:41

tell you what fox

I'll give you the £200 I was going to spend on a sat nav and you can sit in the back of our car for a fortnight

we'll pay you into stuff if you like

it does sound like a good idea (satnav) if you are doing the driving - at least to save you from throttling your mother!

Cappuccino · 27/11/2006 10:50

awww

is that you kindly turning me down?

we have juice and oat bars for the journey

and fairy stories on cd

I will now drive into London, whereas I wouldn't without a satnav. I used to drive to Euston, park, and get tubes or cabs from there - what a wimp!

Even if you get lost, it will quickly re-assess, and get you back on the correct route.

Good luck!

foxinsocks · 27/11/2006 10:52

I would love to drive you round London but I would have to drive. I am a dreadful backseat driver and would probably insist on you pulling over and me taking control!

Cappuccino · 27/11/2006 10:57

fair enough

we'll give the sat nav a go I think

but if you do see a silver MPV parked at an erratic angle on a busy roundabout with a woman being throttled in the passenger seat while two kids in the back tuck into oat bars, feel free to knock on the door and I'll move over
