nick the old ones out your mum's and/or MIL's airing cupboard
(put throw or blanket over bed to disguise ghatly 70s patterns if appropriate)

Or the JL 50/50 polycotton ones are not at all scratchy and are cheaper than their all-cotton stuff. M&S ditto.

I looked at the john lewis ones and thought they were quite expensive got a temporary pack from argos supposing they would be scratchy and of course they obviuoslyt are

Agree JL aren't cheap cheap, but they are def not scratchy and last forever if you get plain colours they won't grow out of (we still use the ones I had when I was little - stolen from mum's airing cupboard ).

Or try 100% cotton jersey stuff - even the cheap ones are generally soft but they take a while to dry if you don't have a dryer - Argos have good colours and they're well priced.

How about some brushed cotton ones? THey also have jersy sets - ought to be non-scratchy.

I think i might try the jersey ones from argos
