if you know someone in the USA get them to buy you one and send it to you. The regular ipod is between $299-$499. Here they are betwwen 248 pounds and 398. We bought two when we went home!

SpringChicken · 10/05/2004 16:59

John Lewis.

You have 3 different sizes - 10, 20 or 40 - 40 being the best as it hold 20,000 songs.

My parents bought my brother one recently - 40's are meant to be £400 - however, JL have had loads returned because they are not compatible with people's computers and where they have been bought and returned they have to be sold on at a discounted price.
My parents got my brothers for £200 and it was brand spanking new

muddaofsuburbia · 10/05/2004 18:55

John Lewis is your simplest bet, although you might find that PC World sells them as well. Dixons sells them online so you will probably find them in their bigger stores too.

The compatibility problems SpringChicken is talking about are less likely to be an issue now as Apple has updated both the iPods themselves and also the software that makes them work.

While getting one in the US sounds attractive, don't forget that you can only import £135-or-thereabouts without paying taxes and charges to Customs in the UK. I don't know the cost of importing an iPod, but you might find that by the time you've paid it, you might as well go and buy it on your high Street. Especially as it's a lot simpler to take it back to a shop if it goes wrong.

It isn't likely to go wrong though. We've had one for three years and it's as good as new.

iPOD rock! honestly they are fab, amazon sell them too.

Bagpuss30 · 11/05/2004 14:52

Best thing since sliced bread (well according to my dh). Ours was from John Lewis too. Only problem we are finding is trying to find the time to put our cds on it. Also make sure you have the right connectors to attach to your pc before you try to get started.

DH got an iPod Mini back in February and is delighted with it. He bought it from Ebay & it was shipped from the US. If you buy one from the US, the mains charger will only fit US electical sockets! You'll need to track down a US to UK adaptor. They do charge up via the USB connection to your PC though.

pollingfold · 11/05/2004 16:08

Go online and find an american supplier - the exchange rate is very favourable at the moment - as someone else said you could pay £300 in the UK, but in the states (including postage) it will only cost £250.

Remember that you pay for every extra - so that won't be in the standard price

One thing I would definitely recommend, is getting the "iTrip" (this is only available in the US) which is a tiny thing that plugs into the top of the IPod and makes it become a radio transmitter - i.e you can use it in the car - on your home stereo (anywhere where you would normally pick up radio) - its only an extra $30, but worth every penny. = also means you don't have to buy speakers.

Dh is addicted to his

willow2 · 11/05/2004 20:26

Might be worth shelling out on some good but non Ipod headphones - those white ones are a red flag for muggers.

hoxtonchick · 11/05/2004 20:44

dp got me a mini ipod for my birthday last week. much secrecy, as he had to buy it from the states on e-bay as you can't get them here yet (i am in trouble for being too demanding ). it's fantastic. i am paranoid about getting it nicked though, so spend the whole time rummaging in my handbag rather than getting it out on the bus.

foxinsocks · 11/05/2004 20:56

wow hoxtonchick, what a great present! Dh is DESPERATE for an ipod but I fear if I get it for his birthday, he will no longer exist as a human being and will be permanently plugged into his computer getting his CDs onto his ipod. I read an article in a magazine about how long it takes to put a whole collection on there (and our house is swamped with CDs) and I've been put off. I think if an ipod entered the house, the kids and I would slip further down the list of priorities (after work, football, ipod I imagine!!).

Does it take ages to download your collection or am I being a tad harsh?

hoxtonchick · 11/05/2004 21:04

yes, he is revelling in getting me the perfect present.... i did get entirely obsessed with converting all my cds into mp3s, but it took less than a week & never has be done again. mini ipods are smaller though (funny that) - they 'only'have 4GB of storage, roughly 60 CDs worth.

foxinsocks · 11/05/2004 21:09

thanks for the advice - think I will have to seriously consider it now if finances allow!

princesspeahead · 11/05/2004 21:10

my dh has one, and is predictably obsessed with it. I make him do all his CDs at work though.... he was suspiciously fine about this until I found out on the weekend that he gets his secretary to do most of the downloading. Cheek!

BearintheBigBlueHous · 11/05/2004 22:27

I got DW one for Valentines Day and have spent since then loading everything onto it. It's done now and now has 3600 songs/tracks on it (with room for at least 1000 more) which played end to end would last for over 10 days. It is the mother of all gadgets especially when teamed with the iTrip (which is illegal here - you become a pirate radio station as soon as you start using it). All our CDs are now stored in the attic. As regards putting CDs on - you just keep feeding them into your computer as you browse Mumsnet, then update your iPod every day or so and it doesn't hurt a bit

As well as being obvious, the white iPod headphones aren't particularly good - so best to get a better set.

John Lewis - full price but great for taking stuff back.

JJ · 11/05/2004 22:31

All of our stuff has been downloaded and converted to mp3s (I'm listening to a playlist on iTunes now). I can't remember it taking a long time.
