My printer has given up and i need it urgently!
Must be inkjet, prefer separately coloured ink cartridges and would prefer wireless as an option!
Not asking for much!!
Thanks

pickledbeetle - are you asking if anyone's got one, or for some advice on which one to buy?

SofiaAmes · 07/05/2004 23:25

I'm on mac, but I'm not sure it makes a difference...I have an Epson 1290 and love it. We also have the same one at work. It does A3 size paper which is great for us as we are architects. You can get really cheap compatible ink cartridges for it online that are just as good as the expensive epson ones. The colored ones are not separate though. I bought mine last year. I don't know if it's now available with a wireless option.

littlemissbossy · 07/05/2004 23:27

I can certainly recommend epsom, we have 3 of their printers of various sizes ... sounds greedy but we're in design business - never had a problem with epsom HTH

pickledbeetle · 08/05/2004 09:20

Thanks lmb & SA - have only ever had HP before so will have a look at Epson too.
misty - have to buy one so looking for recommendations.

The separate cartridges seem to get mixed reviews so not sure if they are worth the cost. Don't really know if all printers can have a wireless card or if it is just the expensive models.

I wil have to got to PC World tomorrow - not sure where else has a big range to look at. Maybe Dixons.

Thanks

we need to buy a printer today. how did you all get on?
we like the idea of seperate cartridges but what are the pitfalls?
mainly business use but the kids get to use it plus occasionally will want to print out photos.

can anyone recommend one as it seems a bit of a minefield?

thanks

toddlerbob · 15/05/2004 09:50

Oh, goodie, I want to know about this too. Our printer is ancient and now I've started work again I need one. I would like one with a copier/scanner function. Any recommendations?

mummysurfer · 15/05/2004 10:16

Ok then, how about printers to avoid?
thabnks

My gut feeling having gone through 3 Epsons in the last few years is that if you want them to print in colour (I mainly use mine for photographs) they don't take very kindly to only being used sporadically. I've had constant problems with one colour being blocked and having to clean the print heads constantly. They always work fantastically to start with and it's all downhill from there IME. I'm sre they'd be fine if they're used every day. I have now got a Canon i865 which has separate colour cartridges and it's very, very fast and prints really good photo quality pictures. I probably wouldn't have paid that much if it had just been for everyday printing. It has really good reviews on Amazon and places like that, and I'm really pleased with it. If you want black and white only then I would go for an HP laser printer. Expensive to start with but very cheap to run. Don't know about models with scanners combined I'm afraid, but I would certainly recommend having a browse through Amazon reviews even if you're not buying from them.

right - got one!!!
canon i560

will let you know how we get on.

tamum · 15/05/2004 13:25

No, I know that they're cheaper elsewhere Robin, it's just that the reviews are useful. I gt mine from dabs which was the cheapest at the time.

Hope it's good mummysurfer

Oh that's a good thought robinw. I did see them somewhere but then forgot about it. My last Epson only went through 3 changes of cartridges before I gave up, and that's even without using compatibles. I might try that though, thanks!

Oh sorry to hear that robinw. I used the same cable I'd been using with the Epson and it was fine. I didn't try the windows alignment (I don't think- not sure what it is). I did try every possible maintenance action I could, but in any case it was only a few months old when all this palaver started. We are still using the newer one as it's OK for most printing, it's just that the colour wasn't good enough for photographs.

I hope you're pleasantly surprised in the end. I find the Canon far faster, as well as better colours.
