Looking for an upright bagless vacuum cleaner. Are Dysons really £100 pounds better than anything else?

OP posts:
Hulababy · 07/05/2004 08:11

We have a Dyson and really like it. Not sure if it is £100 better than other vacuums, but it is good. BUT, be warned Dyson's ofen need a slight repair every 3 or 4 years. Not expensive but can be a pain.

Furball · 07/05/2004 08:31

We have a Dyson DC04 upright. You'll be surprised if you do get one, just how much muck was actually in your carpets and find youself vaccumming everday (til the novelty wears off!!) Just to see how much more you can get out. If you hunt around, most places seem to have £100 off the DC04 at the moment bringing it down to about £160, which is not too outragious a price. Not quite sure what the difference is between our one and say the latest one. But does a good job and comes with all the tools for doing the stairs etc.

StripyMouse · 07/05/2004 08:33

I love my dyson - it was worth every penny and we are certainly not loaded so it was a stretch at the time. I suffer from asthma and it definitely makes the house cleaner.
My hoover broke down just after I had finished hoovering upstairs and was half way through downstairs - it blew up (dramatically) but had been picking up fine. I went out and bought a new dyson there and then, had talked about it for ages. I went over the carpets where I had already hoovered only a few hours before to see exactly how good it was and filled the entire unit up with dust and god knows what else. That proved it for me and felt awful at how dirty my hosue must have been B.D.

Hulababy · 07/05/2004 08:39

Furball - know what you mean about the shock the first time you hoover with the Dyson We had just done ours when we bought the Dyson, but wanted to try it out. I felt so dirty afterwards!!!

toddlerbob · 07/05/2004 09:39

I like my Dyson now, but was going off it. Then it had the repair Hulababy mentioned and they sort of tuned it at the same time and now it's fab again.

We moved into a new house and my mum did the vacuuming and had to empty the canister about 10 times. She sort of did the Les Dawson mouth thing and said in a disgusted voice. "Well you can tell the previous owners didn't have a Dyson".

My mum swears by getting hers at Macro when they are on special if that helps (she seems to buy them for everyone she knows).

Northerner · 07/05/2004 09:47

I Lurve my Dyson and would never buy another brand ever.

fuzzywuzzy · 07/05/2004 09:57

Yep I lurrrve my Dyson, had to convince dp it was would be worth it, compared to a £60 goblin (wet and dry vacuum), but now he's covnerted too and convinced his friend to get one....

ghengis · 07/05/2004 10:01

Another vote for how effective a Dyson is but I would get a cylinder one next time. If I could afford it I would get a Nilfisk - brilliant and lasts forever.

charliecat · 07/05/2004 10:04

Ive got a pull along bagless panasonic hoover, daily we pick up a digisting amount of dust in it and at only 60 quid it was well worth it, only takes a minute to empty too.

highlander · 07/05/2004 18:22

the suction on those Dysons is fabby - but.......
whenever I emptied it, my hands came out in a right awful rash with the dust and I was coughing for a few hours.

Of course, don't discount the possibility that I was just completely cack-handed at emptying it

SofiaAmes · 07/05/2004 23:27

I HATE MY DYSON. It is a piece of c**p. I would never ever ever buy another one. In fact we mostly just use my dh's work hoover which is a £89 Henry.

discordia · 08/05/2004 14:06

Honeypie - this might be too late if you've been shopping this morning!

The current issue of Which Magazine (May 2004) has a feature on domestic appliances, including vacuum cleaners. Dyson emerged as the only brand with below-average reliability (most reliable were Sebo, Hitachi, Oreck, Panasonic, Electrolux).

Saying that, I have an upright Dyson which is 3 years old and has never broken down.

But I wouldn't say that Dysons are worth the extra money, the suction is good, as highlander said but the design of the machine is not that great.

Lisa78 · 08/05/2004 14:18

Had my dyson for 4 years and love it! Only thing I have had to do was replace one of the attachments when DH got a bit vigourous vaccing the stairs!! Cost about £8

Lisa78 · 08/05/2004 14:20

and mine is a funky purple and green
(and in addition to children we have a dog and a cat)

merrygoround · 08/05/2004 14:22

Wow, found this thread just in time. My goblin type electrolux vac cleaner has broken and as I am trying to build a new life thought it would be a good idea to start with a clean home. I like the idea of an upright as I hate the hose thing of the cylinder type taking up half my precious cupboard space. I have the idea that I'll be more likely to use an upright as I can just pick it up and go. Or is this wishful thinking?

ionaming · 08/05/2004 22:46

We have have an upright dyson which is much easier work & more effective than my mum's cylinder dyson. Stairs are a bit tricky but I like the fact that men seem to thing these are real gadgets & so DH actually enjoys using it!!! As well as all the extra dirt they pick up, they're also great at picking up cat hair & human hair which my previous hoover couldn't cope with at all. One day I thought the dyson wasn't functioning as well as usual - turned it upside down & was shocked when I found the roller-brush was hidden with about 2 inches diameter worth of hair!!

Clayhead · 08/05/2004 22:51

I LOVE my Dyson.

I have the DC01 but my parents have the newer DC07 which is definitely better. They used kelkoo and found it relatively cheaply.

misdee · 08/05/2004 22:53

i have had my dyson for about 3yrs now. even tho the only carpets in my home is on the landings and stairs, it picks up a huge amount of dirt. If u feeling flush and want to do a bit for charity at the same time, they have a funky pink upright at the moment for the childrens cancer charity (i think. mine is the one for the menigitus trust. excuse my spelling)

misdee · 08/05/2004 22:54

i also lent mine to my old neighbour when she was looking after her parents dog, she found it great for picking up hairs. in fact she didnt want to give it back.

eddm · 08/05/2004 23:27

Hmm must go and look underneath my Dyson DC01 then as it is pants. Have to use the attachment all the time or it just doesn't pick up. Maybe roller is caked (we have a cat) or maybe it needs a repair...

wordgirl · 08/05/2004 23:51

I HATE MY DYSON TOO! I mean, what use is a vacuum that can't pick up a Cheerio ffs!
And the attachments require super human strength to push them on but then become detached as soon as you start doing anything with them...
It's just as well I leave the hoovering to dh

gingerbear · 09/05/2004 07:32

I wonder why dyson give a 5 year warranty? on ours the motor burned out and lots of bits fell off, but they came out quickly to fix it. I think the motor is the weak point, along with a few dodgy plastic bits. It has coped with plaster dust, wood and concrete. I even vacced up some dog sick last week.

What I like best is the fact you can take it completely apart, wash everything including the cyclone and it works as good as new. (It needed it after dog sick believe me!!

stripey · 10/05/2004 22:36

I have one and think it is rubbish but it is probably because I never wash the filter and so it hardly picks up a thing. It did work well when we first bought it but after dh cleaned out our really filthy loft it never really worked properly again.

bobs · 10/05/2004 22:50

I had a DC01 for years which I thought was great. When the wheel fell off, they sent me some clips FOC. I then bought a DC07 - also called an animal coz its good for dog hairs. However I find its really hard to push - bit like a tank - don't know whether its just mine or like that coz of the extra suction - anyone else bought one???
Probable bought cheapest over the net - try a price comparison site. One thing, the uprights aren't that great at edges - the cylinders are supposed to be better

bobs · 10/05/2004 22:51

Oh and the uprights are no good for big bits - just crumbs, hairs, dust etc which they do v well
