Embarrassingly foolish question about digital TVs.

I'm trying to buy a TV on ebay. My dh said, 'Make sure it's digital'. How do I know whether or not it's digital? Are they all digital after a certain date? Will it always specify?

if it had in built digital i would have thought the seller would put that in the description as it should attract higher bids.

You can still by non-digital TVs in the shops, so i would second what dizzy said, the seller would say if it was.

Spidermama · 18/11/2006 19:45

OK thanks.

Any ideas about what sort of thing I ought to be looking for would be much appreciated. You know, the sort of features which, if I didn't get them, I'd regret it in a couple of years.

I have NO idea what im talking about. but are they , whos they? no idea...but are they not going to switch off the aerials or something so we will all have to watch via cable/freeview or something like that?
So it would need to be...digital enabled or whatever....hmm...no idea what I am talking about.
But we will be TVless when it happens!

Brainwave...look at a top priced one in currys. See what the main selling features are...and go from there
HD is a word that pops to mind. A tv with a hard drive?

DizzyBint · 18/11/2006 19:56

HD is high definition. basically tv with more pixels. so like you can get cameras with 3 pixels, 5 pixels, 8 pixels etc etc, the more pixels the better quality the picture. if you have sky you may have noticed they have some HD channels that you can pay extra for. eventually all tv will be in HD. you need HD box or inbuilt to watch these channels.

charliecat · 18/11/2006 20:18

lol...see i know nothing...hard drive lol

Spidermama · 18/11/2006 22:24

I think fools like us, charlieC, can gain from other peoples obsession with High Definition and the like. It means those people want to move on and we can get there cast offs which, to us, appear to be fantastic, hi tech, futuristic TVs.

That's my plan anyway.

Does anyone reading this feel sorry for my children?

LOL
I have a dinosaur of a TV, So heavy that me and dp together have trouble lifting it...the thing is..we only brought it last year...it was in the bargain bit at currys..
You do need to watch what your buying though, as they are doing something fandangled with will render old tellys obsolete...but how old I dont know

florenceuk · 18/11/2006 23:29

Basically all TVs will need a digital tuner if they are to work after a certain date: have a look here digital switchover . So either you buy a TV with one built in or buy a tuner for each TV you own.
High definition is different - it's a different kind of picture, much higher quality. There won't be any HD on digital - you'll need to get a satellite receiver if you want high-definition. I think Sky broadcast in HD, BBC have plans to. Personally I wouldn't worry about HD, but do make sure either you have a freeview tuner for each telly or that the TV you buy has one built in.

Thanks flo. That's helpful.
