Baby clothes! What do you like/dislike?

I'm slowly but surely setting up my own business selling baby clothes and accessories.

I have gotten a couple of orders from overseas but was wondering, does anyone know of any companies in the UK or Ireland that makes their own clothes?

Or what clothes did you buy/receive that were different from your usual run of the mill pinks and blues?

Any suggestions welcome!!!

I was given french style baby gros with a flap and popper at the back. Really nice.

JessaJam · 17/11/2006 20:14

Bright colours! Stripes!
Bishopston Trading do lentil-weaver clothes (organic, fair trade sustainable dungarees etc)

colditz · 17/11/2006 20:21

I had some really interesting coloured babygrows from Canada, which had turnover feet, so they could be footless or footed, depending on whther you are running arund on laminate flooringm, or in bed

Lovely lovely knitted cardigands, in nice colous like turquoise, sunshine yellow, rust, deep tomato red.

trousers with inbuilt feet, because socks are such a ball ache.

Knitted bobble hats, with chin ties.

Knitted blankets - seriously, ask in an old people's home if any of the good knitters fancy earning some money, buy the wool and tell them what you want! They are NOT short of time, and are usually very very very good at it.

Sheraz · 17/11/2006 20:21

Oh yes love stripes, esp that navy and cream stuff. Bit of a francophile.

all4girlz · 17/11/2006 20:22

yes bright colours like vertbaudet fleecy babygros with big applique and stuff
also old fashioned printed stuff with a bit of style you know like hand smocked bodices
it is lovely to get / find something a bit different good luck

colditz · 17/11/2006 20:22

I really don't like clothes with writing, denim for tinies, baseball caps for tinies, pram shoes for totally immoblie babies and (irrationally) fleece blankets, althopugh I do use them because they are so warm and comfortable!

GoingQuietlyMad · 17/11/2006 20:25

I would second the bright colours.

What I love about French clothes for example is simplicity and classic style. I love traditional clothes for babies, with none of the usual slogans "I'm a little monster" etc.

Just my personal taste though!

Sheraz · 17/11/2006 20:26

Hate 'logos' on baby, and agree with 'shoes'. Like proper booties and old ashioned knits. Love dungaress on boys, but not dark denim, chambray is nice.Cotton jersy separates are good too.

JackieNo · 17/11/2006 20:28

Sheraz, I was passed on a couple of babygros that did up the back, but really couldn't get to grips with them. How did you get your LO into them, since you can't just lie them on top of the babygro and fit their arms and legs in (unless you lie them face down, I guess)? Would love to know, because they look lovely.

Sheraz · 17/11/2006 20:30

Oh crikey long time a go now, I remeber the wholle bottom bit flipped out. Think I dressed them on my knee. (racking brain, more than 3 yrs since had LO in babygro - sad now)

JackieNo · 17/11/2006 20:33

Same here - DS will be 3 at Christmas, so he's been out of them for a while. Was just interested to know how people managed it.

I really like a good contrast trim on clothes, and I like sophisticated, adult colours mixed with a little bit of bright colour. I had a beautiful pair of trousers for ds that were brown, but they were lined with soft cotton with a pale blue and orange stripe and were designed to be turned up at the bottom. The belt was also blue and orange stripe and all the zips had pale blue tabs on them, it was so cute. That came from Dunnes Stores in Ireland, so not expensive.

I really like heavy, close woven cotton, I can't stand it if trousers start to go thin at the knees or tops go baggy after washing.

Stripes are wonderful, so long as the colours aren't too boring. I get a bit tired of boys clothes always being blue, red and green. Something that's mostly green stripes should have a little orange to zing it up, or navy and maroon stripes with a little bit of lime green.

I agree with pruni and colditz about not liking writing/slogans, but I quite like a simple design or picture as it helped ds to identify clothes and made him look forward to wearing particular items. I don't like character clothes, but ds loves Bob the Builder/Thomas so I have a few things to keep him happy, mostly pajamas.

vitomum · 17/11/2006 21:59

i had a couple of babygros that zipped up. They looked cool and were so practical too (think they were gymboree). I also loved a BabyRocha babygrow i had in a beautiful grey/blue with a hood. Totally agree with Bran about the colour thing. Strong, bright colours don't suit ds but more muted ones do.

suburbanjellybrain · 17/11/2006 22:04

love love love the h&m baby ranges - lots of bright colours not just pink and blue but hate the way girl baby clothes seem to be cut tighter than boys (not just because my little girl is huuuge) hate fussy details i.e. lots of unneccesary pockets. Love soft breathable and natural materials obv have to be able to wash in machine at hot enough temp to get rid of poo/sick/food stains!

GoingQuietlyMad · 18/11/2006 07:45

JackieNo, the babygros that do up at the back question.

I used to put the legs in first while they were on their back, then turn them over and put the arms in while lying on their front. Then do up the buttons in that position.

It was a bit of a faff at first, but we got loads of unworn hand-me-downs, so I decided to use them! They did look nice, and I remember finding them quite practical in the end? I found them ideal for 3-4 months plus though, once the baby has a bit more body strength.

McDreamy · 18/11/2006 07:58

I love bright colours (esp for girls nice to get something different from pink or lilac!) I don't like girls clothes that are mini adult clothes. I like boys clothes that aren't always denim!

SparklyfestiveYellowFeathers · 18/11/2006 08:05

I love basically anything that isnt pastel pink or pastel blue.

Like others have mentioned, I'm a fan of La Redoute, Vertbaudet, H&M, some Pumpkin Patch and if I had the cash Oilily.
I love all the colours. I normally dress my dd in neutral autumy colours so lots of browns, dark purples, rusty oranges etc.

Ds is only 12 weeks but I've been buying him clothes with stripes, greens, browns and beige. I quite like dark Navy things too.

One thing I do detest and I have found alot of other mums agree, is dogs, cars, diggers, pirates and the word no.1 and cute all over baby boy clothes!
Why is that?

HTH

SparklyfestiveYellowFeathers · 18/11/2006 08:06

Oh and good luck. Please put a small business ad on here when your up and running!

jennster · 18/11/2006 08:09

I hate clothes (baby and adult) that shrink when washed and dried.

I love hand knitted items and knitted blankets. Hate synthetic fleece too Colditz, although I find pram shoes with velcro fastenings keep socks on when it's cold.

colditz · 18/11/2006 10:02

Jennster - tights under trousers! Regardless of sex!

HowTheFillyjonkStoleChristmas · 18/11/2006 10:12

love knitted items and patchworky things and appliquey type stuff, esp when for boys, cos there's naff all good boys stuff out there.

HowTheFillyjonkStoleChristmas · 18/11/2006 10:13

and I'm another who hates gendered slogans

actually I like gender neutal fun stuff tbh. Dd wears a lot of boys clothes.

malodorantemelly · 18/11/2006 10:24

Love pinks and blues - sorry!!

Have 2 of each so lots of pink and blue in our house. Live in France, hate french clothes, so badly made, shrink, fall apart etc. Will not pay designer prices.

Have to come back to Next at least twice a year to stock up. Oh and tesco's are fab for the basics. Usede to like H&M but got very disappointed in the last few years with theor ridiculous colours and crappy styles.

malodorantemelly · 18/11/2006 10:26

Forgot to say that I do hate clothes that are barbie, bob, dora, noddy, action man etc. Although I will accept wellies like that if pushed!!
