Dishwasher marks

Sorry, a very boring but quick question... how do you get the white marks off your glasses once they go through the dishwasher. Some of my glasses are 'tarnished' and others come out fine. Arrgggh! It's driving me crazy, but nothing seems to get the marks off (give a smeary/frosted effect).

Any ideas?

Hello ! have you got the right amount of salt in the compartment. too much/too little can cause the glass marking.

Janh · 04/05/2004 22:06

You can't, karen

I still haven't worked out why it only happens sometimes, to some glasses, unless it's got something to do with what was in them, or what they're next to?

OxfordBaby · 04/05/2004 22:07

I use a liquid cleaner in dishwasher, and don't put glasses right next to other glasses or mugs etc. so they don't 'rub' in washer. This works for me, I have glass mugs and they are fine.

karen99 · 04/05/2004 22:09

ARrghh! I've tried different amounts of salt and rinse aid and have recently resorted to tablets cos I was so fed up with trying to find the 'best combination'

I think it's my cheaper glasses that mark but I recently put in a glass vase (forgot to get rid of them before we went away for the BH and they reaked when I got back - shoved it in the dw cos I was too lazy and now it's marked )

Kayleigh, we must stop meeting like this!

Which cleaner is that Oxfordbaby?

Any other suggestions or do I just have to get used to it! The price for being lazy!

no suggestions but I also find that cheaper glasses get marks and more expensive ones don't.

I have another problem with mine, I always find particles of food on my glasses, like dust or debris, (hope I'm making sense) even when I rinse everything before putting in dw.
I clean the filter regularly for this reason but haven't found out why it does it. V. annoying as I often have to wash them again by hand!

SoupDragon · 05/05/2004 09:42

It's not only the cheapest glasses I don't put my really expensive crystal in there though - I'm not prepared to risk it!

I've just replaced all my every day glasses with the same ones they use in the Ikea restaurant on the assumption that they go through the dishwasher many more times than a household glass and still look perfect. Also, they're only 50p each so it doesn't matter if they frost eventually (and they stack which makes more space in my cupboard)

karen99 · 05/05/2004 10:27

Thanks.. well if I find the answer I'll post it for sure!

Not sure about the debris.. I sometimes get this in wine glasses or if a glass has slumped over on its side. But it doesn't happen often. I'll try and make a note next time it happens..

Sorry Soupy, I've got the small Ikea glasses that stack (with ridges running round them) and they're the ones that have frosted the most! But cheap enough to replace if need be.

Will have to ask Kim & Aggi !

Damn! Still, cheap and replacable is what I was after!

StripyMouse · 05/05/2004 10:31

I have given up trying to avoid these little marks - have tried every kind of tablet, liquid, positioning in the dishwasher, rinsing anything that is possibily "gritty" first etc. etc. Most of the time they come up so sparkly and clean that I am loathe to hand wash again. Instead I have opted to buy really cheap sets of glassware from Ikea for everyday use and hand wash my "best" stuff. That way I can chuck the stuff out when they become too marked without breaking the bank.

SoupDragon · 05/05/2004 10:36

Apparently the "bloom" type marks are because the outer coating of glass has worn away due to the effects of the detergent.

karen99 · 05/05/2004 10:51

ooooh. so people can tell I've never lifted a finger with regards to a washing up bowl ?!

Oh well, thanks for the help. Cheap and replaceable it is..

The manufacturers, including of crystal, say that you can dishwasher as long as you open the door of the dishwasher as soon as it has finished, it is the lingering steam that causes the cloudiness.

Hope that helps, altpugh have to admit that I won't be risking the crystal just yet!!

Ivybridgite · 05/05/2004 13:11

we were advised to use the three in one detergents and if the glasses started to mist to add a little salt, have never added even a grain of salt and never had any marks either, apparently it's caused by hard water?????

Soft water here, salt not required, I generally use the 3-in-one tabs and never open the door early, but still sometimes get it and sometimes don't (in identical glasses).

I have found that very cheap powder leaves actual scratches behind but that's different.

Easy · 05/05/2004 15:28

We've had a dishwasher for years, and our glasses were always fine .... UNTIL we went to Makro to get some dishwasher tablets, and bought the ones made for commercial machines (Finish, the same make we usually buy), cos they worked out quite a bit cheaper. They got the pots and pans super clean, but have badly scratched the glasses. So we saved money on the tablets, but now need a new set of wineglasses (not worried about the daily tumblers and stuff, they get broken and replaced anyway).

So We've gone back to the domestic Finish ones.

crystaltips · 05/05/2004 15:47

Used to use FInish - which cloded my glasses .... switched to Glist as it "claims" to be "cloud-free" ... so far so good ??

crystaltips · 05/05/2004 15:48

should read clouded!!!
