we have petrol multipla atm and want to replace it.

We were thinking diesel but one bloke told us yesterday that unless we were doing significant mileage then we wouldn't recoup savings as diesel is more expensive to buy and they need servicing more.

He also said that engines have improved and we should get more mileage from a new petrol anyway.

So how old is your multipla?
How many mpg do you get from it?
is it ptrol/diesel?

Please help as i'm now confused

don't have a multipla but am considering getting an old diesel Discovery - one of the reasons being we think it will be more economical even though we don't drive that much.

JanH · 15/11/2006 11:06

Who is the bloke, lwtg? Someone trying to sell you a petrol one?

FWIW I have a 2.0 diesel Zafira but recently had to use a 1.8 petrol one for a couple of weeks and it used about twice as much fuel!!! (admittedly I didn't keep records but I was doing usual mileage, normally a £45-50 tankful lasts me a month, I put £40 in this in less than 2 weeks)

Yes, diesel is a little more expensive, but you use much less and the engines can go on 2-3 times as long.

I don't know about servicing intervals - I do less than 12000 miles a year and mine gets serviced once. DH has a 7-yr-old diesel and his just had its first service in 12 months after 30000 miles - he's always had a company car before and they organised it for him, he just forgot (and so did I)! It was sounding a little rough but is fine now and I don't think a petrol engine would stand for that. (His is not a turbo-diesel though and the old plain diesel engines are more rugged I think)

Multipla running costs from Parker's. Diesel much more economical, same service interval apparently (as it only gives one!)

longwaytogo · 15/11/2006 14:47

thanks for that link janh and yes the 'bloke' was someone trying to sell us a petrol one.

Local fiat dealership have a cracking one at only 6 months old but we would still need a lone for about £9000 and its a bit above our price range really.

Hi
The company that I do occasional work for has Multipla diesel. Its great. Its been on the go for nearly 3 years now and can do anything between 200 and 800 miles a week easily.

SparklyfestiveYellowFeathers · 15/11/2006 16:45

Obviously it gets filled up more than once but compared to the petrol Multipla we had before it is so much better.

(note to self must finish off post before sending!)

lilibet · 17/11/2006 12:47

Sorry for the delay in answering - it's 27.3 mpg but my average speed is 16 mph.

Takes me 40 minutes in a morning to do a 2 mile journey

bogwobbit · 17/11/2006 12:51

We have a diesel Multipla, almost 2 years old.
I would say average mpg is about 35 for very mixed driving conditions. If we're careful we can get an average of over 40 mpg for the drive into work (mostly motorway).

longwaytogo · 17/11/2006 20:57

wonder what the mpg would be for the kia sedona or the hyundai trajet then, seems we can't find a multipla in our price range and at a distance thats not over 100 miles away.

OP posts:
bubbles4 · 17/11/2006 21:09

sedona is about 30mpg, had one for about six months was very pleased but decided i didnt need seven seater anymore as ds1 is now 18 and will not be seen out with us anymore. drove a trajet once and that was enough, the build quality was crap compared with the sedona.

longwaytogo · 17/11/2006 21:18

hmmm 30 isn't very much either is it.

OP posts:
bubbles4 · 17/11/2006 22:04

the diesel is a 2.9 and it realy is a big heavy car, if fuel economy is important you cant beat a diesel zafira, bil is in the trade and have either driven or owned nearly everysort of mpv on market

longwaytogo · 19/11/2006 17:08

bublles zafira isn't big enough for us we've had a petrol and a diesel zafira and the multipla is just so much better for us.

OP posts:
longwaytogo · 20/11/2006 21:08

someone else has said to us today what kind of mileage do you do? Reckons we only need a petrol if we doing mostly local journeys, but the petrol is so gutsy surely we would get more mileage out of a diesel wouldn't we or am \i going mad?

longwaytogo · 21/11/2006 17:27
