Hi, we have very recently bought a Toshiba DVD player (decided to buy this and ditch our ITV Digital box) and have invested in some Disney DVDs for DS. His current favourites are Toy Story and Toy Story 2. However the problem is that the DVDs seem to stick and you have to take them out the machine, clean them and load them back in and usually they are OK after this and for a few days we have no problems until it starts again. I assumed the DVDs would just be like ordinary CDs and we have never had any similar problems with them. Does anyone know if this is normal or should we take the player back to the shop?

Demented, I'm not an expert in this kind of thing, but we've never had this problem with our DVD player. If it's not just one particular disk that's doing this, I would take it back to the shop.

Demented, is it kept in a cupboard with the doors shut? I think that heat can affect these things like that

jasper · 23/04/2002 22:17

Take it back to the shop.
This is definately a fault. My dh could even name the fault because it happened to our last DVD player just after the years guarantee ran out...
New one was cheaper than a repair and it has developed exactly the same fault twice in the first year. I HATE the damn thing. It is just one more thing to break down.
If I had my way the only appliances we would have would be a fridge, a washing machine and a radio.

Dh has been reading over my shoulder (GRRR) and reminded me that our copies of Toy story 1 and 2 had to be returned to the shop,as they were faulty - bought in ASDA at christmas .( this was prior to the machine breaking down). Could you test the disks on someone elses machine?

pupuce · 23/04/2002 22:39

Jasper - And you aga - or is that NOT an appliance
Ooooh I feel cheecky !

jasper · 24/04/2002 04:35

Good memory Pupuce!
The aga is not an appliance, it is my fourth child. Make that my fifth, I forgot about dh for a second.
That's my frugal persona shattered
At least the aga never breaks down ( according to the Aga people)and I certainly couldn't throw it out the window if it did.

We recently had a problem like this with Shrek. Atlantis plays OK and so do my DVDs, so we decided it must be a problem with the disc itself. Anyway, its gone back to Amazon...

I was worried it was the DVD player, but, so far, it seems to be OK. Strange its just the Disney DVDs that seem to be going wrong.

This is really interesting, my DH thought I had a screw loose when I told him I had posted my query here. Isn't Mumsnet great!

Jasper when your machine was broken did you find that the discs didn't always stick, ours don't always stick and never stick at the same place. The only friend I can think of with a DVD player says theirs sticks too but didn't feel it was a fault so I don't think I could take the discs to them.

I really hope its the machine and not the discs as I got the discs from some club or other who seem to be very disorganised and I have the feeling that if I send them back I will never see them again. DS will then spend days crying and I will never be able to get our old Toy Story videos back from my mum, she loves them too!!!

Paula 1 it is in a cabinet thing under the TV out of the sun and the door has been disabled so DS can't open it.

If anyone else has any more ideas or experiences with this dreaded thing I would love to hear from you.

Our first DVD did this alot, some of it is the discs as apparently they are burned or something and sometimes the lines dont quite line up. In the end it just froze and we sent it back and got a replacement which is fine. We just get the odd problem with discs being dirty and the odd stop.

jasper · 24/04/2002 13:42

Yes, demented, just as you describe.
Tell me , was it your idea or your husband/partner's to get e DVD player?

Demented · 24/04/2002 22:52

Jasper, thanks DH is going to speak to the shop we bought it in at the weekend (thought it might be better coming from him). Yes it was more his idea than mine to buy the DVD player, we would have bought one last year only the video broke down and we decided to replace that instead. Anyway a few weeks ago it occurred to us that we were paying about £15 a month for ITV Digital and the only person who watched it was DS, addicted to Cebebies (if that's how you spell it) and we figured that the money would be better spent on the DVD player and DVDs, I agreed not knowing the frustration that lay ahead!!!

Thanks to everyone for the advice and if I have not bored you enough already I will post back next week some time and let you know what the shop said.

Just an update for anyone who is interested (with all the exciting threads out there I'm sure that will mean not many). DH has at last taken the DVD player back (if he had taken it back when he first said he would they would have just replaced it but he has left it too long now, men!). Anyway the shop has confirmed that this should not be happening, the sticking has now happened with five different DVDs, incidently they are all Disney films but find it hard to believe that this many discs could be faulty, the shop has confirmed that this should not be happening and want to repair it, they say it should take around 14 days. I've got a nasty feeling about this one, I think it is going to spend more time in the repair shop than our livingroom!

Anyway a rant on a slightly different subject, our fridge-freezer of 4.5 years has just been condemmed today, thankfully this was one of the few cases where we took out an extended warranty, it is still limping on, rotting food etc and they expect us to wait until next Wednesday for a new one! I thought in this modern age a fridge-freezer was a necessity, nevermind I suppose it is a good excuse for carryouts (if only DH wasn't between jobs just now ).

Anyway thanks to all for your help re the DVD player, will let you know if they ever fix it!

demented, I sympathise. Seems everything dh buys breaks down these days and it is so time consuming to traipse back to the shop once to return it then again to pick it up after it has been repaired. Our DVD player has been repaired twice - that's five car trips including the original purchase - probably costs about a tenner in petrol each time
Now if we were earning 100k a year as mentioned in other threads...but we aint!
