Calling Buggy / pushchair experts!! Advice needed

I?m now 26 weeks pregnant and need advice about pushchairs/ buggies.
We probably won?t be buying it until early Jan but I?m getting in a bit of a tizz researching them all.

This is what I want?..
Lightweight
Long-lasting,
Good value for money
Rear facing (at least at first)
Be able to put a car seat on to it.

Originally I was very keen on the Silver Cross 3D but I think this is too heavy and the car seat doesn't seem to last as long as some of the others on the market.
I also quite like the look at the M and P Quattro with the carry cot.
The micralite looks interesting but several people on here seem to suggest it is not too robust.
I have also looked at Maclarens (as everyone seems to end up with one anyway and there are attachment you can get to make the techno XLR into a travel system but it doesn't have that rear facing option
So come on buggy experts, can I have your opinions?
Then you can all give me a slap for being so obsessed by this.

but not heavy when loaded with child if that makes sense? with baby in pram part i can carry it up stairs on my own under my arm!!

peachygirl · 12/11/2006 16:33

I have to admit if I were to go for a pramette type thing I might be more tempted by the silver cross version.
They're 10.3kgs BTW

i think the silver cross one is pretty much the same for features? it certainly looks very similar. i dont have personal experience of one as only use m&p !!!

misdee · 12/11/2006 16:35

i have an a3 pramette which needs repairing. dd3 can fit in it rearfacing but needs a cushion behind her and an addtional harness. if she falls asleep in my arms, if i fold the foot bit down on the pramette she can lie down and sleep in it, dd3 is tiny though for her age. i'll pop a picture on members profiles i na moment to show you what i mean.

i am a buggy addict, and although i probably shouldnt admit it on mumsnet, i have recently sold my other pushchairs, and other items, and managed to get a bugaboo cameleon ex display on ebay for £399. it may look ugly, but it pushes wonderfully, doesnt kill my hands, and the basket is surprisingly large.

peachygirl · 12/11/2006 16:36

misdee do you have the DD who was in the shoe box animation thing?

i dont know where misdee has got to...?
ds2 is currently using it in pram mode. he is 2 months.
i think ds1 had a sleep in it whilst shopping last when he was 9/10 months? not too sure.

misdee · 12/11/2006 16:38

hmmm leaning more and more towards prammette type things now.
I work with SEN kids and have pushed some shocking buggies in my time so it's important to me to get it right

i have owned 347 different prams/pushchairs and buggiesfor my 4 children. Various makes and guises etc. I would vote for a bugaboo (sorry _ i know they are not popular on here)

For me they are light, push really well, go in the car quite easily, I love my baby facing me, love that it has a proper carrycot for a newborn.
I guess it depends how much walking etc you do but imho mine has been worth every penny. I firmly believe that if I had bought this one first I would not have needed anything else, other that a small lightweight buggy to fly with - (I won't fly with my bugaboo because I don't want it wrecked!)

peachygirl · 12/11/2006 16:56

Not all at once I hope!!

mamasapronstrings, i would have to agre with you with regards the bugaboo, now i have one, i dont see whay i didnt get one soon after we didnt need the double. with me only paying £399, if i keep it in good condtion, and bugaboo doesnt bring out a new model, then i should get that back for ir when no longer needed. the carrycot part wont be used, unless we magically have a 4th lol.

kando · 12/11/2006 17:05

Bugaboos are great - I've got one for dd3 and love it. The carrycot bit is great for the first 6 months, then you've got the option of either the pushchair seat or the carseat until they grow out of the carseat.

The only problem I have with the Bugaboo is the pfaffiness of having to take the pushchair seat off the frame to fold it up, then try and get it into the boot of the car. We've got an A6 with a MASSIVE boot, but it still takes up half of it (well, seems that way!) That's my only concern about the bugaboo. Otherwise it's great - no probs on and off buses/trains and it's really light and lovely to push. HTH, and good luck.

PS: The Bugaboo is my 7th, possibly 8th, pushchair and so far it's the best one!

misdee · 12/11/2006 17:10

yes, we have a large boot (nissan tino) and it does take up a fair bit of room. cant fit it in with all the heart equipment, and it wont carry a VAD lol.

divamummy · 12/11/2006 20:50

bugaboo chameleon for 399 is bargain dd is very cute, misdee

ScotGirl · 12/11/2006 21:06

Btw - I have been told that Silvercross have a much better build quality than Mamas and Papas these days.

This was from a retailer of both...

MamaApronstrings · 12/11/2006 23:13

peachy girl - slight exageration, but I can count 9 with out thinking just remembered two more!!!

I think cheap is a mistake - especially if its your frist and you might want more

samuelthomas · 13/11/2006 16:18

I thought I was a buggy fanatic but I am only on my fifth pushchair and pregnant with baby number three! We have a Quinny Buzz at the moment which I love and is much better value for money than the bugaboo. (Mind you I have never had a Bugaboo.) With the Buzz you can face baby towards you and fold it up with the seat still on. You can also put Maxi-cosi car seat on it. I don't think there is a perfect buggy out there. If there was we would all have it!!!!!!

wishingchair · 13/11/2006 22:36

I've got an iCandy Apple which has a carrycot and a normal buggy seat and you can fix a car seat to it if you want to. You can have the buggy seat facing towards you or away. The carrycot is lovely and big and is quite high up (I always think the bugaboo looks like it's a bit low down). DD2 (she's 12 weeks) so far loves it and so do we.

Downsides - like the bugaboo you have to take the seat off to fold it up. It's not the lightest pram around. Like many others, this is my 527th pram, so I do also have a buggy from DD1's buggying time and I keep that in the boot of the car. But the Apple is lovely to push around ...
