so if you have a breadmaker, is the only way to cut it with a knife??

Lakeland sell a breadknife which fits over the end of the bread and cuts all the slices to the same thickness, I use ours to slice up loaves before freezing them.

I don't have a bread maker but buy whole loaves - it takes practice and a steady hand but it is possible to cut slim slices.

I use a slicing machine. It is very good, but not on the really airy/crusty bread. I find it works very well on the 50% wholemeal loaf which I usually make. I also use it to slice home pressed cold meats, roasts, whole salamis etc etc. Bit of a pain in the arse to wash though...

No, mine is a sharp breadknife with a little bit extended out from the blade about 1/2 an inch - you hold it against the end of the bread and it slices it to the same thickness every time. It does work, I like mine

Have to say MumtoAnne, it's cutting the bread which has put me off buying a breadmaker.

The Lakeland gadget is just another expense. Greensleeves, is it really any good? It looks a bit awkward to me, or maybe it's because she's doing it left-handed!

Yes, that's the one. I find it very useful, I like my bread sliced evenly and not too thickly, and I find it quite difficult to do on my home-made loaves without this knife.

I find breadmaker bread is denser than shop bought and easier to cut. Cheapo wobbly bread knives don't help either.

I use an electric meat slicer thing (which also gets used for other 'slicing' jobs too. Really quick and easy - and it's easy to pack away/

We had the Kenwood slicey thing linked to below, and it was really good... until a few months in it started chewing everything up... then a few months more the mechanism started sounding really ropey, then it just stopped working all together.

Would have taken it back under guarantee but we use a knife now...
