Sick of DS gettting up at 5am so thought i would try the bunny clock (the one that opens it's eyes when it's time to get up). (every thing else has failed so desperate to try anything)
you can get them from gltc but delivery is £5! anyone got one? are they any good at getting early risers to stay in bed? anyone know where I can get one in shops?

We've got one and we like it! Ds is 3 now and yells "BUNNY'S AWAKE!" when it's time to get up and runs into our room so he's obviously awake and waiting for his ears to click up

Cons:

  • You can only set the alarm 11.5 hours in advance (otherwise it wakes up instantly) which is a pain when they go to bed at 7am and you want them to get up at 7am. We tend to creep in around 10pm and amend the time.

  • Quite fragile - a child could easily break it. We keep ours on a high shelf where ds can see it but not handle it.

We got ours from gltc too, and think it was worth the money. We've certainly got a lot of use out of it.

Worked with my wee one for a while. Only problem is it's tricky to work: dd was the only one who could set the alarm. First one arrived broken - ears a bit flimsy. Now given up on it. Great idea, badly made, but could be enough to get your ds out of bad habits. Sorry got mine from gltc.

Ooh, glad you posted this. I was thinking of one of these for my 2yo DD who has started waking up at 6-6:30am every morning. Fine on work days, not so great on days off and weekend. Like the idea of her knowing when it is the right time to come out and wake me up

We had a bunny clock ... it worked for a while, but like cab found it a bit fragile, and it broke before too long.

Also my boys are in bed for more than 12 hrs, so you have to remember to creep in in the middle of the night to set it for the next morning.

Other things that have worked for us int he past:

Having a low wattage bedside lamp set on a timer to come on 'at a reasonable hour' as a signal for them.

Setting a loud alarm clock ... when they were regularly awake before 7.30, but I wanted them to stay in bed til them, we just used a regular cheap digital alarm clock to bleep when it was time to get up and get dressed.

Now they can tell the time - they know they are 'allowed' to get up at 7 am, but know they can get away with getting up at 6 am ... so I sometimes set the clock wrong - an hour slow - so they don't! (BAD mummy )

Agree with the downsides people have listed here. We've got one but haven't really started using it yet. Instead, we've been using a nightlight on a timer switch and have found this really effective in keeping ds1 (29 months) quiet in the morning 'until the getting up time light comes on'.

Ours unfortunetly got chucked down the stairs by accident which as you can imagine ended poor bunny's life very quickly. The downside was that DD and a couple of other children I know worked out how to get it to open it's eyes very quickly, so it wasn't really a lot of good. A radio alarm clock does the job much better.

I must say that the combination of bunny clock and star chart have changed our life! I agree that the 11.5 hours setting is a pain, and it does look fragile, but the "novelty value" of it is superb and ds comes into our room very proudly when the bunny has opened its eyes. I guess it depends on the age and nature of the child - not sure that mine would be quite so disciplined waiting for a light or the radio, but he might be once a bit older...

katierocket · 02/05/2004 16:51

thanks ladies, I did think about the radio or light but somehow the bunny seems an easier concept for him to grasp.

think I'll probably give it a go - desperate!

you know, thinking about this sounds like there is a market in a similar, but better made, product.

My ds ignores whether bunny is awake or not, he'll be up when he jolly well likes!! Aaargh. So it didnt work for us, still set it though.
