We've got smelly drains!

It's particularly bad in the mornings (bathroom only). We've put soda crystals down and that works for a couple of days but wondered if there was another product that could make more of an impact? TIA

call the council out as maybe a blockage that u cannot solve it yourself

MrsBadger · 08/11/2006 09:33

which drain is it?

If it's not the loo it's most likely because of a hairball (nice!), which the soda won't dissolve.

I find best solution for the shower (our prime culprit) is to hoick hair out of the u-bend 'trap' with a bit of bent wire, but if it's the sink and you're handy you could unscrew it and clean it manually.
WARNING: It will be smelly and horrible and you'll wonder how there's any hair left on your head. Have a carrier bag (no holes) handy to put the yuck in.

Follow with a dose of Mr Muscle Sink and Plug Unblocker (or whatever it's called, orange bottle), and get a haircatcher to stop it happening again.

oh i thought it be the outside drain (not read your post properly)

yep best to do it manual as we did it with ours but be aware its smelly (of course!!)

we tried loads of things ourself to no avail

called in drain doctor. 30 mins and £100 (ish - can't remember exactly) all fixed - ta daa

I've never heard of the drain doctor but will look into that. The smell seems to come from the toilet/basin/bath (I presume). Around our way the drains (outside) are narrow and historically have been problematic. We had someone look at the o/s ones at a cost of £500. The main thing I remember them saying was to not ignore the problem as it won't go away. I'm dreading the thought of them blocking and then needing replacing (oh the cost!).....then there's the roof, the fence - oh blimey I'm depressed!!!!!
What a lovely thread this is!!!
