2 very dear ( but absolutely loaded) friends have had a baby late in life. They will be innundated with pressies at the christening. what can I buy that they will treasure but is slightly more unusual please?

I see a christening present as something 'for life' or a crate of Port of the year of birth, which comes to almost the same thing. The year my godson was born was, apparently, not good for port so he didn't get it. I got him a chess set of lapis lazuli and something-else-of-similar-nature-but-diff-colour-which-I-can't-remember-the-name-of, edged in bronze. He's 15 now and v good chess player, but prefers the body board!

bump please....

If they're loaded,by definition they won't appreciate yet more stuff

I think there is something seriously wrong with our society when we are scratching our heads, desperately trying to work out what we can buy for people who have everything.

I would suggest an Oxfam gift like a loo or a set of inoculations..

robinpud · 02/11/2006 22:27

I know what you mean Moondog; am trying to think of something which will be useful in the future. also would feel awkward turning up for christening and meal at posh hotel which they are paying for emtpy handed

They won't even notice, people with too much never do.

robinpud · 02/11/2006 22:28

Cassoulet.. a chess set is a lovely idea..

moondog · 02/11/2006 22:29

They've probably got loads Robin...

robinpud · 02/11/2006 22:29

moondog.. they are loaded but also spend to limit whereas we have a fraction of what they have but save for future etc

My ds2 was given a crystal piccolo from Ireland, which is beautiful and very unusual. Other really special gifts they have received include a really gorgous antique little copy of Shakespeare's sonnets, a really nice copy of The Water Babies with the original colour plates, a 1/4 sized violin, a little antique solid silver bell. I like those things much more than the usual christening stuff.

moondog · 02/11/2006 22:33

Gosh,that violin sounds soooo useful.

GunpowderTreasonAndSNOT · 02/11/2006 22:34

His parents are both violin players, and he is now 4 and learning to play it (it's the right size for him now), so yes, it is useful

moondog · 02/11/2006 22:36

Excellent.
Now then...are you campanologists too???a

robinpud · 02/11/2006 22:36

Hmm.. thanks for the thoughts gunpowder.. wouldn't trust myself with anything quite so delicate. Would also not want to give them anything too valuable to dust.

I made a time capsule for my nephew and it really went down well.

GunpowderTreasonAndSNOT · 02/11/2006 22:37

The bell has been to numerous folk sessions, yes, along with all the other small and easy-for-kids instruments we have

Quit while you're ahead, moony

moondog · 02/11/2006 22:38

How about naming a star after the child's name? I did it for my friend's baby - they send you a 'map' of all the stars and a certificate telling you that number "12345" star is now named "Miss Hooley". They can even frame it for you. Everyone thought it was a great idea. Try this:- www.starregistry.co.uk

we got my dps godson the hand imprint set from john lewis. his parents seemed to like it and nice for him when he grows up to see how tiny he once was!

Kittypickle · 03/11/2006 20:10

DD got a Cross silver pen and pencil set from my brother which I thought was lovely and hopefully will be some use to her in the future.
