Washing machine - help me out...........

sometime in the next 7 months we're going to be buying a new washing machine. I currently have a very old and decrepped Servis Washer/Dryer with a very small load capacity.

What I would like is:

A 7kg drum
Digital display that tells me how long is left in the cycle
Good economy rating
One that automatically works out the load weight and adjusts the washing cycle accordingly would be nice too, but not essential.

Most importantly CHEAP - well doesn't have to be ridiculously cheap - but (wihtout having sat down and worked of figured) I'm guessing we're going to be looking at £400 MAX.

Oh, and it doesn't have to be a washer/dryer - just a washing machine would be fine.

So - any suggestions?????

"Why would you need one of those? Maybe being a bit dense here? Can't you just look at the clock on the wall?? "

Similar reasons to pretendfriend really - time is a real issue for me with the washing, as I work nights, sleeping during the day, then have church music commitments, meetings, antenatal appointments soon to be added in, DH works 'opposite' shifts to me so it'd be useful for when he's wanting to do some washing. Or if he's wanting a shower, but the washing machine is on - should he have breakfast and make some phonecalles first, or will it be finished soon (our shower is attached to the mains water and it can't cope with the washing machine and shower.........get cold/hot spurts when the washing machine is taking water in LOL).

Mine is an LG one and does everything you have requested in your OP BUT it isn't cheap. I think we paid about £445 for ours nearly 4 years ago.

NomDePlume · 02/11/2006 11:53

The one I have is discontinued now, but this is the nearest spec to mine and they've made the drum even BIGGER (8KG) !!! Not dropped the price though

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 02/11/2006 11:58

oooo - I like it..........just going to measure the space that our current washing machine sit is.....it's got a gap around the sides and top - and I don't care if it sticks out 5 inches LOL.

You can knock a few quid off the price by going for a lower spin speed. The 1400 is the thick end of £450, but the 1200 is £378.98.

OMG they do a 10kg one !

PretendFriend · 02/11/2006 12:06

WM14316FD, the one NdP linked to, isn't in the Which report but the WM-14311FD is and the spec looks the same as the 14316 - and it's a Best Buy! (First time LG have had one)

£410 at Dixons

It's a fantastic spec! (I would still get a Bosch meself, but the extra 2kg capacity would make me think about it for quite a while...)

NomDePlume · 02/11/2006 12:10

We've had no problems with the LG. DH was VERY wary of spending so much on a 'not so great' manufacturer, but he has deffo ate his words over the last few years

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 02/11/2006 12:16

ooo I want it, I want it, I want it...........still I'll have to wait until after Christmas before I get it - no spare cash this month (DH didn't get his bonus - thankgoodness I worked an extra 50hrs last month!) and obviuosly December will be Christmas stuff.....so hopefully Jan/Feb time I'll have new machine.........

The sales will be on then too, QoQ so you 'll prob get a better deal

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 02/11/2006 12:19

ooo never thought of that .

It'll be so nice to have a machine that I can't hear from upstairs LOL.

OP posts:
PretendFriend · 02/11/2006 12:46

Oh the LG is noisy, according to Which....

My Bosch is upstairs, and I can't usually hear it even in the kitchen immediately below.

Decisions, decisions...

I wouldn't bank on a January sale bargain, QoQ, because they are changing the models so frequently these days they get reduced all the time just before a new model comes in - I think that was why this Bosch was so cheap at the Co-op (some places that did come up on google as stockists don't have it now).

OMG, look at this LG at that co-op site - 1200 spin, 7kg, £275 This is the page of LG machines there - stick it in your favourites and keep an eye on it! (NB Silver ones cost more than white)

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 02/11/2006 13:40

oh I can guarantee it won't be as noisy as mine...

Our bedroom is at the front of the house (victorian one so quite good 'sound proofing'), the kitchen is at the back - under the 3rd bedroom. Even with the bedroom, lounge and kitchen doors closed we can still hear it!!! Yet with just the lounge and bedroom doors closed the noise of the boys playing is quite low.........
