What do you think? Are the graco ones worth the money? What about other makes of electric swings - are they any good? What about vibrating rockers for babies. Or should I save my pennies???

my brother has a vibrating rocker for his ds and they are really pleased with it.

fairydust · 21/04/2004 22:39

i'd just go for a nice padded rocker - the graco ones they seem to grow out of them so quick and the vibrating one swallow batterys like you wouldn't believe

Zerub · 21/04/2004 22:40

DD hated her vibrating bouncer (and it was quite upright so not great even when switched off). But she loved the Graco swing (the only way she would nap out of my arms for the first few months). But every baby is different and some love them, some hate them. They always sell well on Ebay though so if your baby doesn't like it you could get most of your money back.

If I was buying a swing now I'd get a little one - search for "take-along swing" here .

cazzybabs · 21/04/2004 22:50

Umm have read some not so good things about the take along swings. God damn it if only fetuses could talk it could tell me what it would like.

Cazzybabs if you are still pg then I would wait and see if you need it.

grumpyzebra · 22/04/2004 03:35

I would have had a swing if we had space and money for it.

Skara · 22/04/2004 06:21

First time round I thought the Graco swings were awful inventions, but then I had a child who lay snoozing beautifully in a moses basket allowing me to eat meals, hang out washing, go to the loo...all those exciting things we take for granted . Second baby however was a very 'in arms' sort of person and the swing was the only way I could do anything or spend time with dd. Neither of mine were keen on bouncy chairs or rockers. If this is your first, I think it's probably best to wait and see if you have the sort of baby who needs a swing - if it's your second or more I'd say get one now!

Angeliz · 22/04/2004 08:05

Just a word of warning about the Graco swing. We had it for dd and she cut her leg on the clasp on the side. It was razor sharp, we took it back and got a ferund.
Complained to everyone and folowed it up with Trading standards who said it wasn't their first complaint about it.
When we checked a few months later it was still the same in the shops so please check the sides!!!!

(Have to say, she did love it before all that though)

Angeliz · 22/04/2004 08:07

We got a refund too

katierocket · 22/04/2004 08:24

think skara is right - if it's your first I'd wait and see, DS hated the swingy thing.

GillW · 22/04/2004 11:48

I couldn't have coped without our swing - ds always wanted to be on the move, so being able to put him the swing rather than having to haul him around ALL the time mad life a lot easier. It was also great at getting him off to sleep when he didn't want to go off on his own. Unfortuantely he grew out of the swing long before he grew out of not sleeping.

Twinkie · 22/04/2004 11:51

I would have sold DH (he is x2b now so I should of) for a swing (I actually just bought one but would have if the need arose!!) - think they are the bestest thing that you can buy for a baby!!!

juniper68 · 22/04/2004 11:57

Is there anyone you could borrow one off or buy a second hand one? I've just lent mine to a mate and swear by them (battery graco swing)

BearintheBigBlueHous · 22/04/2004 14:58

We have a Graco swing which we never had any injuries with and which is in vvgc, it's virtually as new complete with head hugger and toys. If you prefer buying pre-loved than shelling out the full new price, let me know and we'll come to an arrangement. I'lll even throw in some batteries

we have both I'm afraid! DP wanted a portable swing and I wanted a vibrating chair (we already have a graco swing). Neither of us would back down on it so now we have a big graco swing, a portable swing and a vibrating chair. We do use all three of them though. Gosh, people are gonna think we're made of money, - we're not, just both very stubborn!!

Chandra · 22/04/2004 15:35

We loved the vibrating rocker, initially bought to keep him in a sitting position after meals (he suffered from reflux), we later extended the use to prop him up during colds and allow him to look to things he couldn't be able to see when laying down, he really loved it.

we took ours back to the shop as the novelty quickly wore off for our ds1. best thing we have bought for both our ds's was a sling you can wear on your back. they love the movement, warmth and your heartbeat and can see whats going on or fall asleep while you get on with stuff.its taken me 4 years to realise this but its the toy companies that need the children not the children needing the toys. if you wanted to pursue sling idea i have one called a 'baby trekker' you can wear it both for front and back carrying up to 4 years of age

WideWebWitch · 22/04/2004 22:15

Secur, I've got a Graco one sitting in the garden which we don't want or use. It's been covered over but probably needs a clean. A friend gave it to me and you're welcome to it (don't want any money) if you can get it - we're in Bristol.

BearintheBigBlueHous · 22/04/2004 22:21

Easy tiger - I'm not ignoring you, Secur, I was just at the park, then the supermarket, then tea, then bedtimes, then our tea, then UEFA cup football. Sorry, Mumsnet took a backseat this afternoon.

It's the equivalent of this one Funtime but in a different colour fabric and the play tray is detachable and much more interesting )more toys and a mirror) and I'm sure it has 3 or four reclining positions not two. Like I said it's in great condition, we don't have the box, but I'm sure we have the instructions (such as you need them) somewhere.

There's been nothing more from cazzybabs, so I guess she's not interested, although she too may have had other things to do. Looking at ebay sales, £30-ish seems a fair deal (plus whatever freight costs are necessary) - I need to sell as we're on an austerity drive at the mo to fund a new (non-leaking) car - but do tell me if you think that's a damn cheek.

We also have a basic bouncing cradle (like the one on the link above) if you're interested

BearintheBigBlueHous · 22/04/2004 22:23

D'oh - have to read threads before posting in future. Right I'm off to ebay.
