What are the rules for buying a car?

My uncle said it's something to do with age of the car and the mileage. Should have done 10k a year or something. But I have no idea what he was going on about.

Can someone explain it?

I am totally making an assumption...
If the car is one year old, he is suggesting you don't buy if it has more than 10 thousand miles. 2 years 20 thousand, 3 years 30 thousand and so on if it is under that amount great, however if it was to far under and the car looked like it had been used more I would be concerned that it had been clocked (changed the mileage to show a less amount).
But it also depends on engine sizes for example.
Can you ask him again if he seems to know what he is talking about?

He's talking about average mileage which in the UK is 10-12k miles per year. No problem with buying a car with higher than average mileage as long as it has a good history file and is in good condition. Buy on condition not mileage.

Hi, I just brought a new used car privately and I thought I'd share my experience, it may help you :)

when going to view a car always:

  • check all the tyre tread
  • make sure there is full service history
  • the MOT isn't due yet!
  • the outside of the car has no scratches
  • ask the seller why they are selling the car
  • as an average you are looking for the car to have done approx 10k miles per year
  • make sure you check that all the doors (including the boot works)
  • Check that their is no rusting around the tyres
  • Ask if they have any receipts of any work they have had done to the car
  • Spare tyre?

Hope that helps a bit!! Just make sure you are buying from someone you like and trust, it is important to test drive the car at least once!!! and always go back and view the car at least once :)

Good luck - I love my new Mini Cooper!!

The only rule that I would think is really important is 'take a mechanic'.
