phil and teds OR sling and buggy for baby & toddler

Hello,

I am having my 2nd baby in December.

My first baby will then be 18 months old and I'm really confused as to what to do buggy-wise.

I am not keen on getting a Phil and Teds because I don't think they're great for the baby - restricted view, can't lie totally flat.

But equally, I don't think I can get a side by side double buggy because living where I do (north east london), I'll never be able to go anywhere!

Is a good alternative to keep my toddler in his existing buggy (a bugaboo) and sling my new baby? Or will I regret not investing in a double buggy?

Any advice gratefully appreciated!

I will be in the same position BUT I wouldn't go for a sling...good if dc2b is tiny but what happens when they are a 10lber and more..??!
DD was 9lb 4oz's and I'm banking on ds2b to be even bigger... No way I could carry this weight while pushing a pram and defo not for a long time..!!!

There are other tandem buggy options including the Jane
The baby will be totally flat to start with in the P&T

You can always try with a sling then buy a buggy if it doesn't work out

baby will be totally flat to start with the p+t. but i would go for double mountain buggy with one carrycot tbh.

but a good sling is a worthwhile investment. i think a wrap sling will be good for when pushing a buggy. it depends on how often you use a sling to how well you can carry IMO. so carrying a newborn in a wrap sling wont be that hard whilst pushing a buggy, but if you stop doing it for a few weeks, then i think you will notice.

im carrying ds in sling with dd (2) in buggy, bought a tandem the other day and it is sooo heavy, gonna send it back!! will probably get single and buggy board!

what about an emmaljunga with a toddler seat, easy to push with one hand, baby can lie flat

TheBlonde · 16/10/2006 20:45

mumo75 - which emmawotsit would you need? who sells them in the UK?

sling (coorie or ergo) + buggy

then reassess in a few months

you won't regret buying a decent sling with a newborn and a toddler anyway.

I would def go for sling + buggy. I still easily sling my 28lb toddler, so it is possible to find slings that will work for heavier toddlers as well as little babies. There was a great article in the guardian this weekend that you might want to read:

I've done both pusshkin - I use the P&T when I'm doing shopping, going a long way etc and the sling (made myself for £10, use the wrap cross carry method of tying - see here ) for shorter walks.

If you buy a P&T you will make most of the money back when you don't need it anymore by selling it on ebay.

The other thing is that the baby does lie completely flat for up to 6 months and the carrycot insert is very snug. My friend who is at the two toddler stage is still loving hers as well and the lack of view doesn't seem to bother her youngest - he can still see plenty out of the sides. IMO it's one of the best double buggys around.

Have you looked at the Jane Powertwin as an altenative?

hana · 17/10/2006 10:06

I have a newborn ( 4 weeks) and toddler ( 21m) and I've been slinging and using a single buggy since she was born for the school run. It's been ok but there have been times when it would have been nice to have her in a buggy lying flat and me not carrying her ( cafe after dropping dd1 off to school!) or going to library with dd2, things like that.
I've orderd a Jane Powertwin and just waiting for delivery today! Will still use sling as it's v comfy and easy to throw on . dd3 still v light, and can use sling till she's a good bit older as well ( used it with dd2 until she was about 15 months)

FillyjonkthePumpkinEater · 17/10/2006 11:31

my two, now both toddlers, fight over who should go in the bottom, btw.

pusshkin · 17/10/2006 15:26

Hi everyone,
Thanks for all the advice.
So the consensus seems to be I get a decent sling and a phil and teds! But I will also have a look at the Jane one.
cheers
