Bread making machines - do they leave a hole in the bread ?

I know there was a thread recently on bread making machines but I can't find it. DP says that they leave a hole in the bottom of the bread where the thing which mixes it is. Is he right ?

I recall that the Panasonic one is the best - any views ?

the Panasonic one does indeed leave a hole in the bread

If you really object to the hole, you could decant the dough and bake in the oven

We've got a Morphy Richards one where the paddle flips down towards the end of the baking cycle so that it only leaves a small hole. I think this is the one but it's worth searching around because we got ours for £40 including postage. Can't remember the name of the site though sorry .

NastyNemo666 · 15/10/2006 22:35

we have a kenwood and it does leave a small hole in the middle. Not enough to make any difference to your bread though.

Tommy · 15/10/2006 22:36

it really only affects the last slice or two so it's not such a big deal!

helsy · 15/10/2006 22:39

Ours does but it doesn't bother me -we just use it for butties. Maybe if we wanted to make posh bread we'd just use it to do the dough and stick it in the oven so it looked nicer. Depends what you want it for.

SOULGHOUL · 15/10/2006 22:43

Ours leave a big hole - wouldnt be without it though.

ok - another question (and thanks for replies so far). Are breadmakers really worth the expense ?I have just made my first loaf by hand and was stunned at how easy it was and how it looked (and tasted) real !!
Do you just bung all the ingredients in and set it off ?

btw, I can live with holes in my bread but dp is fussy like that

Well done you ...any bread I ever hand made came out not unlike a house brick (texture and size)

Personally I wouldnt be without it...mine is a morphy richards cost about £40 and is a few years old now.

I use it for loaves...I make a 50/50 wholemeal/white loaf as I found because the yeast has to have sugar to activate it was too sweet for me and yes you just throw it in & leave it.

We make the dough for bagels, you then have to shape, poach & cook them (which the kids love helping with). Pizza bases are superb again it makes the dough then you shape it & cook in the oven. We did a New York Potato pizza recently and that was lovely.

Only thing is I dont find it has that lovely yeasty dough taste that (other peoples) hand made bread has.

It is probably the gadget we have used the most though.

The panasonic ones leaves a very small hole which only affects around 2 slices per loaf.
Got if for £70 on amazon and was worth every penny!

tortoiseshell · 16/10/2006 12:35

We use ours all the time. I tend to bake the bread in the oven though, as it seems to bake better, and has a better texture. YOu can then do shaped loaves/bread buns etc, and pizza dough is really nice too.

We use ours every day (Panasonic) and it's fabulous - wouldn't live without it now. Small hole, affecting only a few slices and even then I barely notice it. Just bung everything in (don't even sift the flour) and press the button.

One thing I would recommend though is to also buy Fresh Bread In The Morning - it's a great book with very simple bread recipes for bread makers in it. You don't need all the stuff the maker's handbook says you need in it. Basic white loaf is just yeast, flour, salt and water and tastes FANTASTIC! (Grumpyghoul - might be worth it for you too - hardly any recipes have sugar in... and out of preference if sweetner is needed, the author uses honey instead - much nicer flavour)

FillyjonkthePumpkinEater · 16/10/2006 12:43

the hole is pretty small on the panasonic, really, and its at the bottom so you can't see it anyway.

am somewhat mystified as to why this would be a problem!

The bread tastes soooooo fabulous that believe me, you will not be worrying about holes.

We had a nasty few moments the other week when we thought that the panasonic had broken...turned out it was just a fuse but I was all ready to pack up the kids and get the bus into town at 8.00 at night to get another one. Cos they are soooo fab.

chickeninabox · 16/10/2006 12:57

Thanks all - I am not bothered by holes, but dp mentioned them, and as his information is always based on something he saw/did 15 years ago, I thought I would ask MN !
Grumpyghoul - I didn't bother with sugar in my loaf and it came out fine.
I was checking out the ingredients on a shop bought sliced loaf and couldn't really work out what the extra crap is that they put it. The fast action yeast I used seemed to have the same sort of stuff in it. I know there was another thread recently with a link to something about manfactured bread - does anyone remember it ? I'd be interested to read up.

Ta for the book link as well GeorginaA - looks useful

my brother donated his breadmaker a few weeks ago and we're loving it.

i make a 50/50 white/wholemeal every 2 days and dd and dh have it for toast. there is a bit of a hole in the middle but it's no biggie really.

it does seem to sink a bit in the middle tho - it rises fabulous in the machine but when it's finished cooking it's a bit uneven on the top.

any tips? it still taste fab and if bread didn't have an effect on my skin i'd be eating a loaf a day!
