Tips on buying double buggy please

Right, you may have seen other threads where I was asking for advise on specific double buggies, but as I cant find what I want here in the UK, I was wondering if anyone has any dos and donts of buying a double buggy.

My baby is due in Jan, DS1 will be 17months so still needs a proper seat, although he doesnt sleep in his buggy now so recline is not so important for him.

I really would rather a tandem as I have no car in the day and have to get the bus so dont think that side by side is much good on public transport. DS is a pretty big boy and all the side by side ones I have tried dont even fit him now let alone as he gets older.

I am quite tall, 6ft and find it quite hard to find pushchairs that have tall enough handles

Any tips on what to look out for would be really helpful!

Have you looked at the Jane?

Dragonhart · 14/10/2006 11:39

Yes but I was not too sure about a three wheeler as my previous buggy had three wheels and while I can control it if it tips with one chld when going up the kerb, not sure I could with the weight of two.

The new Jane has 4 wheels but the seats are not stadium type where one is higher than the bottom. Also not much leg room for the child in the back.

We started with a side by side and it was realy hard work to push, in the end i agreed with dh to get a tandem, we bought a 2nd hand powertwin and it is great, realy easy to control and it can be used as a travel system, its as easy to push as my single buggy.

I had a Mothercare own brand side by side, it was the right width to get on and off public transport, easy to collapse and get in the boot, and okay for dh who is 6ft 3 to push without stooping. It had 3 recline settings (flat, halfway and sitting up).

Have a friend with the Jane powertwin and she finds it great .. As for worrying about going up kerbs she goes over bridges ( Venice) faster than me with my single buggy ! Her Husband is quite tall as well. But the handle is adjustable I believe.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I have looked at a Graco Tandem which looks pretty good in Argos and much more room in the back than the Jane and as there will prob be someone in the back til 18months that seems very important.

Tahnks again.xxx

Hi Dragonhart, you might try an emmaljunga with a toddler seat, they are great and when your older child is just walking he can get in/out of seat (with help)They are single width and very easy to push with one hand, big shopping basket, full lie-back for baby

I've just bought a jane powertwin although not due with baby 2 for 6 weeks. Number 1 will be 20 months. Does anyone have advice about whether i need to buy a carseat to put the newborn in as the back seat doesn't seem that flat to me . Any ideas? m

TheBlonde · 21/10/2006 21:54

mwasc - the back seat is considered flat enough for a newborn - you don't need a car seat
