Would you say this was a unisex gown or a girls gown? Am trying to find something for my ds2, and this is the most like what we'd like, but don't want him to be too 'girly' iyswim - there are one or two flowers in the embroidery, but they're not ott!

Be honest!

Its really lovely but I think it is quite girly tbh.

southeastastralplain · 09/10/2006 13:20

think it's ok for a boy!

PrettyCandles · 09/10/2006 13:22

I think it's lovely. Presumably it's for his Christening? At such a young age it really doesn't need to be very gender-specific. What you put on his head (which will probably be removed in any case!) will make more of a gender-statement: a bonnet that ties under the chin - very girly, a cap with no frills and no ties to hold it on - definitely boyish.

tortoiseshell · 09/10/2006 13:22

oh, yes, forgot to say was for christening, not everyday!

Everyone has their own preferences but I myself would not dress a boy in this for a christening or day to day.

It looks like a dress imo

CappuccinoTheHaikuPedant · 09/10/2006 13:25

god you've not seen the homemade creation one of my mates dressed her ds's in

they looked like the Pillsbury Dough Boy

that is beyond appropriate in comparison

tortoiseshell · 09/10/2006 13:29

anyone else?

OP posts:
TheBlonde · 09/10/2006 13:38

unisex

HELLisHeavenis · 09/10/2006 13:40

It looks fine to me. Very suitable for a boy.

jasnDISMemBERED · 09/10/2006 13:41

unisex.
Ifyou like it, then get it.

MamaGhoul · 09/10/2006 13:42

fine for a boy. What is hte alternative, a bloody sailor suit?

Twohootsandapumpkin · 09/10/2006 14:00

Sorry also think it's a bit girly. Some places have lovely boy christening outfits - i.e. little trouser type suit things - do you not like them? Don't know how much you want to spend but Vertbaudet always have some reasonably priced really 'posh' stuff....

At the end of the day it's YOUR son, so you dress him in what you want. A good few years back boys did wear dresses for christening and no-one batted an eye - in fact boys day to day clothes were pretty girly too!

Zippetydoodahzippetyday · 09/10/2006 14:09

Yes agree Twohoots, would think a boy would look much nicer in pants than a gown.

Depends what you want really "traditional" or "trendy". You have to think that your boy will also ask you why you dressed him in that as he gets older as children do.

Twohootsandapumpkin · 09/10/2006 14:24

Sorry just had a look on Vertbaudet and they don't really have any 'posh' type stuff in the winter collection - had loads in the summer one! That's a shame.

waterfalls · 09/10/2006 14:27

I just read your thread title as .................

onions needed quick

tortoiseshell · 09/10/2006 16:14

THanks for opinions - I've looked everywhere basically, and both dh and I prefer the 'traditional' look. I'm not really keen on the trouser and shirt ones or rompers tbh - they remind me a bit of clown suits! And I do think it's nice for them to look special on their christening day.

So, given that we probably want to get a gown, there are some gowns that are definitely for girls, some definitely for boys, but this one we can't decide. Those people who thought it was a bit girly, was that on account of the gown, or the style of gown iyswim?

Tbh, I don't care if ds2 does say 'why did you dress me in that', because he's got the rest of his life to choose what he wears!!!

tortoiseshell · 09/10/2006 16:15

lol at onions

tortoiseshell · 09/10/2006 16:15

Twohoots - thanks for looking for me!

OP posts:
firsttimemama · 09/10/2006 16:18

I think gowns are fine for boys, in fact very nice and pleasently traditional, however the hem on this one puts me off - can't see the flowers but that tips it towards too girly for me. Have you tried John Lewis?

Twohootsandapumpkin · 09/10/2006 17:30

I too don't like the hem and don't like the embroidery on the bottom at the front - what is it? Is that where the flowers are?

I agree he has years to wear WHAT he WANTS so go with what you like!

tortoiseshell · 09/10/2006 18:10

The flowers would be what would put me off too. I did look at John Lewis, but they haven't got anything remotely like it.

I hate choosing things!

The other one I'd looked at is this one which I don't like as best in itself, but is definitely a 'boy' gown.

OP posts:
tortoiseshell · 09/10/2006 18:11

'don't like as best'......sorry for my crap English!!! 'don't like as much'

OP posts:
tortoiseshell · 09/10/2006 18:11

but I do still like it

OP posts:
Jbck · 09/10/2006 21:33

Much prefer the first one I think the second one actually looks really girly. I think without the bow this would be lovely & has some nice detail without being girly.

tortoiseshell · 09/10/2006 22:10

Thanks Jbck. I don't know what to get. It's a small dilemma, but I'm going round in circles! At this rate he is going to be christened in his very cute tots bots nappy!!!
