Which small 4x4?

I am looking for a small 4x4 as we are about to move to a house up a nont-properly-made road where there is a reasonable risk of getting snowed in at times.

I will have a 2 year old and a newborn from January so needs to be big enough for 2 car seats, and boot space for a (very compact, luckily) pushchair.

I am looking at something like a Panda 4x4 or a Skoda Yeti, on a budget of up to 7k. A bit bigger would be ok if it is within budget.

Anyone got any recommendations or suggestions?

Volvo XC60 if not too big, Fiat Sedici/Suzuki SX4 is an option, but I'd probably go with the Panda anyway.

Actually, I'd go with a Subaru Forester if I really needed all the traction I could get, but that's probably bigger than you want.

Skoda Yetis get rave reviews. We have the scout and it's great. The only thing that put us off the yeti was the boot space-much less than the octavia 4x4 variations. We don't need a raised chassis though as our roads are made, just never gritted!

Should add that we have v large dogs, which was why the football pitch sized boot was needed.

My FiL bought a Yeti for similar reasons (although no babies) and loves it. I rejected one as boot space is small. We have an Octavia 4x4 instead.

What about a Passat with 4 motion? Unless you think you're going to need the road clearance of a proper 4x4.

I'd recommend a Toyota Rav4 or a Suzuki Vitara.

What about a 2wd car with a set of winter tyres? Likely to outperform a 4wd running summer tyres from a traction point of view.

I agree, but does the OP really need that? Just thought it worth mentioning that going out and buying a 4wd with summer tyres may not be the solution to the OP's problem.
