Games - what are the hits/misses with your kids?

DD was given Monopoly Jr for her birthday last year (5), and to my surprise, she loves it and we play it all the time. She also enjoys Snakes & Ladders and Candyland.

What games/board games do your kids especially enjoy? Any that they don't like that are best avoided?

Thinking ahead to Christmas, and looking for ideas......

its the whol winign losing thing that ruins it here

charliecat · 29/09/2006 19:51

Scrabble wins along with the others you have mentioned.
Everything else gathers dust.

Surfermum · 29/09/2006 19:52

The Washing Machine game was a hit with dsd and now dd.

southeastastra · 29/09/2006 19:53

simpsons cluedo is great fun

Saturn74 · 29/09/2006 19:54

Mancala is great. I think it is advertised as easy to learn, hard to master. My children can beat my parents easily!

Cadoo, Jenga, Cluedo and Monopoly (Simpson's version) are also big hits in our house.

Furball · 29/09/2006 19:55

I've got Junior Monoply for ds for Christmas as they were reduced down to £5 along with Operation and Buckaroo also jenga is £3 at the entertainer

Junior Scrabble huge hit in this house

PcCOD · 29/09/2006 19:55

UNO

Earlybird · 29/09/2006 19:55

cod - so your boys hate to lose? DD doesn't seem to mind losing, and I hope it stays that way. Of course, I'm her main opponent and don't gloat or wind her up so she just enjoys the game. If she was faced with that, she might feel differently.

Which games do you consider classic?

Another vote for Simpsons Cluedo.
Also "Whot" which is really old (dc played it at my parents but managed to get it off ebay)
The Twits game. Good if she likes Dahl.
Will ask dd when she appears from Brownies.

PcCOD · 29/09/2006 20:18

age for s cluedo

foxinsocks · 29/09/2006 20:20

junior monopoly
junior scrabble
shopping list (they still love this one though getting a bit old for it now)
that annoying fishing game from woolies (is it hooked?)

we've just got battleships but it takes a bit too long at the moment (and they cheat outrageously)

foxinsocks · 29/09/2006 20:21

oh best of all is Squominos - they love this and it's the one game I find quite bearable

Finbar · 29/09/2006 20:21

bingo lotto game - love it!

Saturn74 · 29/09/2006 20:41

Earlybird - my two are aged 10 and 8.

Earlybird · 29/09/2006 20:46

HC - thanks. So games they're interested in probably too advanced for dd....but good to keep in mind for future.

Earlybird, I think Mancala, Cadoo and Jenga are all fine for younger children to play independently - mine were playing them at 5 or 6.

We played Cluedo and Monopoly as team games when the children were younger, with an adult and child working together (we've found it helps to diffuse the distress if you lose as part of a team! )

Bozza · 29/09/2006 21:03

Well one that has not been mentioned yet. DS currently loves Guess Who. And DD is into animal lotto. But it is good in that at 2 she can play it on equal terms with us. DS has also always liked dominoes, and my Mum bought him this slightly different car dominoes game (it's like dominoes but different) last Christmas and it has been a big hit.

DH and I play Triv (but need new questions) and Scrabble. Would like another adult game that is OK for two players.

Surfermum · 29/09/2006 21:07

Oh yes, Uno. Fab fab fab.

I've played Mancala with a 4 year old who beat me consistently - very simple game but tricky to master - good for kids to play against a distracted parent!

Uno is another good one too - simple but can be played on different levels, so great for whole family.

My school kids loved to play trivial pursuit (kids version)

Earlybird · 30/09/2006 08:07

I'm clearly out of touch - haven't even heard of some of these games! Will definitely follow up on suggestions here as need fresh indoor activity ideas as the colder/shorter days approach.
