Grobags ...

What do you think of them?

DS is a kicker and blankets are going flying during the night so I'm thinking of going down the gro-bag route.

Some questions:

DS is 18w, around 16lb and quite tall. If I go for the young baby, he'll be out of them in another 2 mths so they'd be a waste of money. Is he too small to go in the older baby size (18lb upwards and they measure 92cm long).

What happens all the extra length when the baby is in them? Do you still put the baby's feet at the base of the cot per the SIDS advice and just tuck the surplus fabric under, or can the baby lie further up the cot?

If I buy the older baby size, can I be sure that he won't wriggle down inside it, ie. how big is the neck?

Tog rating ... I was thinking of one x 2.5 tog for nighttimes now and a 1.0 tog for naps and also to use at night during the summer. Does this sound sensible. His room is around 20 deg. C.

Do they shrink much? They say you can tumble dry but can you really?

Leaky nappies ... we seem to get more than our fair share. Are they really inconvenient in this respect?

Finally, moving the baby out of them - is it really difficult or is transition to blankets/duvet okay.

Sorry about all the questions ... I've never been that keen on them but think they may be the answer now.

Thanks!

Asda are selling 100% cotton gro bags for £10 at the moment. Didn't check out larger sizes - first size is 0-6 months, min weight 10lbs

I've never heard of any real safety concerns for young babies and it has always been possible in France etc to get for newborns - just think it isn't really so useful as newborns don't tend to wriggle as much so easier to use a cot blanket (we used a polar fleece type bassinet blanket which was lovely and snuggly and also light) when you are changing them up to three times a night!

I wonder why everyone else seems to love them and my kids hate them; screamed at them, as soon as they could roll over, because the bag didn't let them roll.... do your kids not roll or can they roll fine even with bag on?

melsy · 09/04/2004 16:05

Dd does roll in both her grobag one & her soft mothrecaare one. IKWYM , I was a little worried about restricting her , but she seems to find a way!!

This feedback is great - thanks!! I've been thinking, and reckon I'll do as someone suggested and just use grobags for nighttimes and keep using blankets for naps. I've looked at some of the other sites but think I'll stick to Grobag - I just love some of their designs! Sad.

Lemonice ... I'm looking for 2.5 tog in Choo Choo train for older baby and 1.0 tog in the bear one - same size. Can you give me your shop URL address?

Grobags are fab! Both my kids have them and can crawl and walk in them, so obviously not that restrictive. We've bought a couple in french supermarkets - one even had poppers so you could fold the end over. My latest one is from tchibo and cost £7.50. When it came to changinging to the duvet we let DS have both in the cot for a while so he got used to it.

Hulababy · 09/04/2004 21:22

grumpyzebra - when my DD had one she could roll, sit, crawl, climb and even try to walk in her Grobag!

lemonice · 10/04/2004 17:19

Millie1 sent email of the shop URL but not sure if it worked

Unfortunately don't have the right ones you wanted in stock either Sorry

Haven't got many grobags on site yet because the multi size soft ware needs tinkering with by web designers and it takes too long to put all the sizes on individually

do use grobags - a small family run company from devon run by the son of my parents neighbour down there! they're so nice - when I left an entire bag of ds's clothes by the front door on my way down to devon last summer, I just popped next door and asked the mother whether her son could help my out. Low and behold, I arranged to meet him at the village fete(!) and he turned up with a selection of his kids old ones

Also - ds (2.4mnths) is very active, and extremely tall, and has never considered climbing out of his cot, although he does it in the day as a sort of game. And, with blackouts, he can't see to undo the zip in the morning

Millie1 · 12/04/2004 21:15

Lemonice ... thanks for checking whether you have them. BTW, your e-mail didn't come through. Don't know what was wrong there. I've put them on back order through Bump to 3 now so hope to have one pretty soon.

thanks everyone for advice.

I'm almost scared of tempting fate but ... these are brilliant! DS is now in his grobag for the fourth night and has gone from literally waking every 2 hrs from midnight (and tossing & turning inbetween with me lying awake to tuck him in again) to sleeping from midnight til 4, then til 7 or 8am. Luxury!!

Thanks for the recommendations everyone!
