Twin prams..My head is spinning..HELP!!!

shhhh · 23/09/2006 17:22

I need help.!

I know thread aftre thread has been done on twin prams BUT I need help with the prams I am interested in.

DH & I have been to mothercare world today and have looked at the folowing: (BTW need pram for a newborn and dd who will be 16 months)

City Twin
Phil & Ted
Jane
Mothercare Hoxton

Out of the 4 viewed we are impressed with the First wheels city twin and the phil and ted. I also like the hoxton...

Anyone got any advice.?
Reasons we like/dislike the above:

City Twin: Baby can face us and outwards, easy to steer and really nice looking. However when it fold, it not flat and is bulky. But suppose this is expected with a double pram..Also worry about it fitting through shop doorways..

Phil & Ted: Like the bit for the newborn and the fact I can see baby while I push the pram. Its slim enough to fit through anywhere.
BUT not sure if I'm keen on another 3 wheeler.
Not sure if I like the idea that baby undernearth/at the back doesn't have much of a view.

Hoxton: Folds flatter than the others but is heavier. Easy to use and cheaper than the other although price isn't to much of a factor..

Jane: Quite long and as I;m only 4ft 11ins I can't see the end of the pram so as is the case with the 3 wheeler I have now I end up raming it into the backs of peoples legs . Quite a bit expensive esp as we would also get the car seat even though we planned to use dd's old one.
I like it in seat mode but with the car seat bit it looks like alot of metal is on show iykwim. Not sure if I like another 3 wheeler and tbh not sure if I like the overall look..

HELP..!!

ALSO: Do you have a tandem or a side by side twin pram..?? Pros and cons please..

have a look at this for some P&T comments - seems to be a problem when the younger one is between 4-6 mths, also issues with fingers in wheels

I don't know why everyone goes on about the price of the Jane as it's the same as the P&T

I will have a 2 yr gap and can't fit a twin in our house so not sure what I'll do yet

shhhh · 23/09/2006 18:01

mmmmmm...interesting. Thanks theblonde. Anyone else.?

lol - I've just replied to your other thread and it looks like we're thinking the same things about them! DS will be about 18 months when baby 2 arrives.

I have to say that I'm ideally looking for a 3 wheeler with inflatable wheels as I off road a fair bit where I live (no choice!) and need it for manouverability.

Today I saw the Nipper double. Nothing fancy about it, but both seats recline and it is very light and narrow. Fast becoming my favourite I think

suzi2 · 23/09/2006 20:04

TheBlonde - have you thought about a buggypod? I would consider one if my DS was going to be a wee bit older.

longwaytogo · 23/09/2006 20:13

i had nipper and can't fault it in any way, shape or form. I could give you a whole list of reasons why you should go for it if your interested

suzi2 · 23/09/2006 20:27

longwaytogo... give me the reasons please . I'm struggling to find a bad review, so maybe more good ones will convince me!

longwaytogo · 24/09/2006 07:22

suzi2 here goes.

Its lighter than any single i've got at 9kgs

It pushes like a knife through butter - even up hill its a doddle and I have lived on big hills

It lies flat so even a new born is comfortable

You can take the wheels off making it smaller if your tight for space in boot, or if you been for a muddy walk

You can get things into the basket even if both seats are lying down.

Toddler and baby look comfy in it

Brilliant storage pockets on hood and at back of seats - can get enough stuff in not to need to take seperate baby bag

sturdy

Fits through all single door ways

Doesn't feel too long like other three wheelers

Hope that helps. If I think of anything else will let you know x

TheBlonde · 24/09/2006 20:09

Another option for you shhhh...
I saw the Jane Twin Two Pushchair in John Lewis today - it's not a three wheeler

aaronsmummy · 24/09/2006 20:16

I have tried all of your options and have stuck with the Phil & Teds.

Hoxton too heavy

City Twin was a pain to keep slitting the seats & chassis to fold uo.

Jane doesn't have too much leg room at the front so ds2 kept slowing me down by putting his feet on the wheel.

p&T is easy to manouver and dd although nosey doesn't mind being in the bottom at all. Sometimes I swop them over and ds2 goes in the bottom

aaronsmummy · 24/09/2006 20:16

sorry, I meant splitting the seats

shhhh · 24/09/2006 20:25

theblonde, i;m off to jl's website now to look at the jane 4 wheeler..Thats a idea if it looks right.

Thanks arronsmummy..TBH today prams have been going through my head again (god what a life I have!!) and I was 100% set on the Hoxton..is the weight really that bad..? I said to dh although the seats don't face me out of the ones we viewed it folds the neatest/smallest and I won't have the worry of fitting through doors..also if we go away it's still portable ish for a double buggy ie if we had the city twin we would have no end of problems travelling abroard.
Also its only £200 so the cheapest so if not suitable not a great loss iykwim..

My friend has got the Jane and loves it.

I have just bought the double Nipper 360. We bought it instead of a holiday this year

I love:
That it's so light.
That it's one of the narrowest, if not THE narrowest double on the market and it does seem to get through most doors.
That it's so manouverable
That it's so comfy for the boys
That it folds quite flat
That the wheels are quick release

I don't like:
It seems quite bulky and difficult to fold up and down and sometimes a strap gets caught when I am doing this and it gets stuck until I ease the strap back down the bar
The foam handle gets easily damaged
They haven't designed a shopping basket for the new 360 model yet so there's not much space but there is on the older model with the static wheel.

What's wrong with 3 wheels?

I bought this instead of a really old tandem graco I bought for next to nothing, second hand so I have experience of both Tandem and Double.

I think being able to get a pushchair through your front door is a big plus but being as neither would go through mine because there is a strange corner round to the hall that wasn't an issue for me.

The tandem was so heavy and DS1 seemed so far away in it. I couldn't talk to him as we were walking round. It was so much harder to lift up kerbs because it is so much longer you have to push down on the handle so much more. I was practically jumping sometimes. They fold in a different way (well that one did) so it doesn't go so flat. I felt that when going round corners on an incline, it would feel occasionally like it was tipping sideways

However, I do miss that it was so thin. This is certainly an advantage if you go to town centres/shopping/ to busy places a lot.

I take it you have found the Mumsnet reviews section on doubles/tandems. This helped me make my decision.

Best of luck. Please excuse the waffle but I figured some of it might be of use

shhhh · 24/09/2006 20:29

OMG theblonde..I love it..!!! I actually saw this one last week and forgot . When I went to mc yesterday I thought the Jane twin we saw was this one lol..!!! This one looks nicer than the 3 wheeler imo..Thanks..!! Now off to check prices..

shhhh · 24/09/2006 20:40

TheBlonde · 24/09/2006 21:17

Just to chuck another idea into the mix - have you considered the Marco Sky? Apparently it's not good if you are short but it's a lot cheaper than the Jane etc

ills · 24/09/2006 21:19

I have a nipper double for sale if you are interested

shhhh · 25/09/2006 13:06

will look at it now thebonde but at 4ft 11in I may not be suited is thats what they say...

OP posts:
TuttiFrutti · 25/09/2006 13:19

Ills, what colour is your nipper double and how much do you want for it? Also, what area are you in?

Stiglet · 25/09/2006 13:20

I'm 4'11 and have a Jane, the handles adjust really low... you have no hope with a Marco it was far too high for me

ills · 25/09/2006 13:21

Nipper double is dark blue. Has a small split in foam on handle but otherwise in good condition cost £275 new. Would take £10 I am in Cardiff. E-mail me if you are interested. [email protected]

ills · 25/09/2006 13:22

Sorry should be £100

sweetkitty · 25/09/2006 13:40

I have 18 months between my 2 and spent 9 months debating which pram to get for them, in the end I settled on a M&P Twin Aria which I now hate with a passion.

reasons:

  • it seems really flimsy I don't particularly like the way the seats recline and one of the toggle things to recline them is broken, the tray underneath is a bit of cardboard with a flimsy bit of plastic covering it, you cannot put anything heavy in it or it drags off the wheels.
  • not that great at getting in and out of shops
  • i spent £90 on the cosy toes for it (DD2 born in Jan) but they are for a single and they are too wide for the double so they don't fit properly, also you cannot fold the pram up with teh cosy toes on an absolute pain when you are getting two of them in and out the car in the rain

if I had the money right now I would go for a Cosatto Duet Twin I had a play with one at the Glasgow Pram centre but am too poor too buy it

TuttiFrutti · 25/09/2006 19:22

Ills, would have loved to buy your nipper double but we are in Surrey! So probably not feasible, as I don't expect it's easily postable.

poppyh · 25/09/2006 19:54

Sweetkitty, agree regarding M&P twin Aria. I got one from Freecycle, but i soon learnt to hate it!It is such bad quality and never seems to fold properly.
I bought a phil and teds, which i loved until now.
Youngest is a very tiny 7 month old who cannot support her head, but it crawling. She is too big for the newborn bit and too small for the toddler seat, and my other DD is too big to go underneath. It has become a bloomin nuisance at this stage!

spagbol · 25/09/2006 20:15

Don't touch the Marco Sky, it's the pits to push - totally unmanoeuvrable.

P&T is ace. When my baby at 4 months got fed up with the bottom I just put him on top, and either ds1 (who is a tall 4.5 yo) or ds2 went at the bottom. ds1 is over the weight limit for the bottom, but it hasn't bent or broken and has never tipped up. It's really easy to push. You'd think the bottom seat was the worst but that's where they all want to sit because it's a 'cosy house'. The only bad thing is that you can't recline it with 2 in it so their heads loll around when they're asleep. They don't seem to care though .
