having been car seat free for more than a year, i am now having to go back to two car seats in the back, with a nine year old squeezed in the middle.
i actually think they are less safe now than they were before.
i need to buy dd a new car seat as she cannot continue to sit in the car seat she has, or shell be strangled. at 3.5 she is far too big for it.
any suggestions on what to buy that doesnt cost a hundred pounds: pleasee.

lba...you honestly htink that it's SAFE for a Toddler to have the seatbelt under their armpit...sorry, but you are very wrong there...I am pretty certian that, in case of accident her rips would probably be crushed, which is not a good thing!
As for Boosterseats...well...my es Boostercushion never slid away under him or anything...because it is secured by the seatbelt!
Honestly, please do a bit of research about this, and see if you still feel that way afterwards!

The only reason a booster cushion (not seat) would slip from under a child was if the child was not heavy enough to be using it.

But at 2.5yo, as the OP's DD was at time of taking out of car seat, she should have still been in a second stage car seat anyway, and definitely not a booster!

fattiemumma · 25/09/2006 22:28

booster cushions have sticky up bits at the side which help the seat belt stay in place and therefore not slip forward.

booster cushions shouldnt be used until the child is about 4 years old so thatthey are heavy enough to weigh it down.

as for putting the seatbelt under the armpit....im sory but that is incredibly dangerous.

seatbelts are designed to sit across teh collar bone and top of the thighs/pelvis. the reason for this is that they are the strongest area's of your body. the amount of force thatyour body in under during a crash the seatbelt will cause serious damage if not positioned properly.

if you place the seatbelt under your childs armpit and you crash it will crush his chest, break ribs and could possibly cause massive internal injuries.

PLease....these rules are for SAFETY not to earn extra fundng, think about what your doing

The new laws and related guidelines are now saying that booster cushions (not seats) shouldn't be used until age 6. And that under 6s need the back.

hunkermunker · 25/09/2006 22:38

If you crash and she has a seatbelt under her armpit, she'll likely be killed

There was a seatbelt device on Dragon's Den the other day that described just this manner of wearing a seatbelt. Children have been paralysed and killed from this. So no, it's not safer. It could be fatal.

jamieboo · 25/09/2006 22:46

but the booster cushions are still suitable from 15kg? but law wise do they NEED a back or is the cushion just enough?

luckily i dont yet need to worry about it, ds1 is still in his first class, but soon I'll need to get a booster. I was going to get one with a back anyway but just to know, can it be a cushion even if he is nearly 5 but over 15kg?

nulnulcat · 25/09/2006 23:29

my mum doesnt drive and often takes dd who is nearly 3 in taxis what is she supposed to do then? she cant really lug a car seat round the shops and there are no taxi firms in this area that will provide a car seat

hulababy · 26/09/2006 08:38

Taxis are emempt fom the new laws.

hulababy · 26/09/2006 08:39

hunker - I linked to that product earlier: here

Also a good alternative to use in taxis, etc. I suspect. Better to use this than nothing at all.

Can someone give me a bit of help. I have a Graco booster cushion which when I bought it said 15kgs upwards. I just had a look on the Argos site which has a Britax booster cushion that's a group 2 or 3. The picture had no back on the seat so is it suitable for a 4 year old. The booster cushions DS has are both the ones with the seat belt adjusters on them.

Clary · 26/09/2006 13:03

Personally I would put a 4yo in a booster seat ie one with cushion and back. But then my 7yo is in one of those.

fussymummy · 26/09/2006 13:22

I have my 5 year old and 3 year old in booster cushions.
Both are really tall for their age.
5 year old is only a few cm under the height restrictions.
My 3 year old is actually taller than a friends 5 year old.
There is no average child as they're all so different.
My 8 year old doesn't need car seat as he's taller than height restrictions.
Also if you have 2 seats fitted in your car and cannot fit a 3rd seat then the eldest/biggest child is exempt.
