Very wide doorway - safety gate help!

I'm thinking DD will be on the move in the next few months so I need to get going on buying safety gates. I wanted to put one in the archway that leads to our dining room (sort of attached to the living room, not like a separate room).

Is there a safety gate that will extend to 118cm? The extending ones I have seen only go to 108cm and I guess you cant use the extenders on extending gates. I can't afford to spend hundreds on it, but I'd really like to have that bit off limits so the less baby friendly shelving etc can stay there, as there is nowhere else to put it. Obviously won't just be leaving DD in the living room unsupervised all day but I'm a little worried I'll have to be constantly catching her to stop her going in there.

Please help!

What about one of those retracting ones that are like sideways roller blinds?

addictedtosugar · 28/08/2014 09:50

would you consider a mesh style??

How about the BabyDan ones that come in panels? They have a wall mounting pack as well - I use one as a stairgate as I need a 3 panel one to enclose the bottom of an open plan staircase.

This one. You can take panels in and out and they have extra bits so you can make it exactly the width you need.

Baby dan is the job. We used ours as a fireguard which went right round the outside of the hearth.

You could build one, either mdf or an old pallet.

At the top of our stairs there's a step up to the last and one to the right and its also quite wide so we needed an extra wide and extra tall gate as the kids would climb over a normal height one. A gate that would work was stupidly expensive so DH got an old pallet and made a gate which I painted and it works brilliantly.

Thanks for the responses. Will have a look at the babydan ones or maybe look for a mesh type one if not. Unfortunately I don't think either myself or my husband's DIY skills are up to the task of making one!

We also have an archway then step onto tiled kitchen floor. We got a linden playpen that can be opened out. It came with wall brackets to fix to either side of the archway. You could take panels off the play pen to fit the gap. We had nearly 2.5m to span.

i think the roller blind ones are fantastic. So much better than gate style. Nothing for kids to swing on, nothing to trip over and very difficult for little fingers to open.

Lindam do one I think - actually I got mine on ebay for much less than RRP.
