christening presents

Does anyone have any good ideas please for a christening present?

Or rather 2 presents as it's for 2 brothers being christened at the same time, one is 1 and the other is 2 years old. I dont know the family that well (business colleague of DH) which is making it even harder.

Any ideas gratefully received.

Books? Go for a nice hard backed story that they will grow into.

If you don't know them that well, it makes it a bit harder, as you won't want to spend as much! Agree that a book is a good idea. Maybe a really nice teddy or cheaper 'heirloom' type present. You can get nice 'Winnie-The-Pooh' china ornaments in Debenhams.

How about a special Bible each that they can keep to become a family heirloom? I don't mean one of those huge ones, but you can get some lovely white Bibles with silver crosses on in WHS and similar bookshops. They are being christened after all

pewter hipflask with initials on for when they are older? might be too personal...

FWIW, and it does depend on the family's values, my last christening present was a donation to World Vision for the immunisation of a child in Africa - there are other possibilities - The Alternative Gift Catalogue .

Nice china, eg. mug, plate, bowl, or set if you're feeling generous. Hard to go wrong with Peter Rabbit or Bunnikins. Or a little framed picture.

Money boxes are always good for small children, and they don't have to be expensive ones either!

Mckenzie,
Check out mumsnet's best gifts for a newborn . There's lots of good ideas there - especially in "the rest" bit.

thanks for all the ideas guys. Would it be very wrong to buy a joint present, for example the hands/feet casting set that is mentioned on the MumsNet Gifts suggestions sounds like a good idea but it's quite pricey at £45 but if you could do 2 sets of hands/feet in the one set then it would be okay for both of them. But is a joint present a bit naff? They are brothers, exactly 1 year apart.
