Looking for a poncho

I'm looking for a poncho for my dd who is 5. Saw one in Gap but didn't want to pay £30 for it!
Would appreciate any help in tracking one down!

Our Gap has its sale on right now. The ponchos are not in it.

Kid - that sounds great

Since getting DD hers we have been stopped in the streets on numerous occassions, asked where we got it from, etc. One grandma even asked to look at how it was made underneath so she could have a go at making one for her granddaughter

sammac · 09/04/2004 09:46

Checked in Gap for you yesterday and there was ONE age 8, but not on sale. Glad you got sorted out.

melsy · 09/04/2004 10:02

That sounds good Kid , does she make adult ones!!!

kid · 09/04/2004 10:08

melsy, I could always ask her for you. She is charging me £15 (that includes P+P) She is away for the weekend at the moment so won't be able to reply to emails but I can contact her on tuesday if you are interested. She is currently 8 1/2 months pregnant so I'm hoping she will manage to get mine finished before she goes into labour!!

Oh thats a different story. Woudnt wnat to ask her to do anything else now!!! Not unless she was 100% happy about doing it. but baby is imminent!!!

melsy · 09/04/2004 16:08

I just bought a fab one in grey from M&S for me. Per Una range £25 so really good value. Its crotched & has big holes !! but very soft with long tassles. Now me and DD match !!! I still really want a long plain ribbed one though!!! Will look out for the NEXT one too!!!

Mirage · 10/04/2004 14:54

Melsy,glad you found one.

Codswallop,I am sort of an insider.DD is a baby model & Next use her to fit their 3-6 month old clothing on. (shes not in the catalogue or anything). So we get to see what the new ranges are in advance. Some of the older models were trying on ponchos a couple of weeks back when we were there.I bet they are for Autumn/Winter then,as thinking about it,poor DD was trying on snowsuits at the same time.

We normally go once or twice a week,so next time I will ask when the ponchos are due out.

ps my mum is a manic knitter-should I tell her that she could start her own little poncho business?

melsy · 10/04/2004 15:01

There is definately a market out there for them mirage. She would have customers already and waiting on here. Both kiddies and adult ones!!1

hercules · 10/04/2004 15:19

How can a baby be a model?? How did she get into this Mirage?

hercules · 10/04/2004 15:20

Sorry if that sounds rude!

Mirage · 10/04/2004 18:12

Hercules-it is because I am Kate Moss!

Seriously though, people kept stopping me in the street everytime we went out & commenting her big eyes & how beautiful she was.More importantly (all babies are beautiful IMO)she is extremely good natured, interested in everything & rarely cries.I didn't know if anyone used babies as models & after a good few weeks of thinking about it & discussing it with DH,rang a local agency whom I knew had a good reputation & enquired. They asked me to send in 2 snapshots & some details which I did, never really expecting to hear back, but they rang within days & sent us to Next, for fittings of baby clothes.

They must have liked her, because we go back on average twice a week & the staff there are lovely. They say that it is a great part of their job as they get to see models who came in as babies grow up, & still use the same kids as they get older.DD is getting a bit big for 3-6 month clothes now,so things will probably slow down until she fits the next sizes.

DD did a photo shoot for Cosatto too,but I don't know which catalogue she will be in yet.It still amazes me that there is actually a market for models this young, but there definately is.I suppose you only have to look at all the childrens wear/toy catalogues around these days to see where the demand comes from.

I am VERY careful what she does & have turned down things that I don't feel are right for her to do.All the cheques are made out to her & go into her building society account,so she can use it for what she wants when she is older,to go travelling or towards a car ect.Sorry if this last bit sounds defensive,it is just that some of the mums I have met through DD's 'work',have had funny comments made to them by people who don't approve.

Melsy-I will have to mention the poncho crisis to my mum.

hercules · 10/04/2004 18:46

Thanks mirage- wondered partly because dd has been very clingy and wont go to anyone at all since about 3 months so I wondered how they could then model iyswim. I thought the clinginess started 8 months but clearly not in our case.
Tbh i dont have an opinion on it either way.

hercules · 10/04/2004 18:48

Sorry Kate btw we do have a very thin connection but due to anonomity (spelling) I cant share it.

Btw that doesnt mean I am in anyway famous (thankgod).

Mirage · 12/04/2004 19:20

Ohh-we have a thin connection? My mind is racing-what could it be?

Have you slept with Jonny Depp too, perchance?

On the clingyness front,dd is fast approaching 8 months,so we will have to see what happens. As she is my 1st baby,I'm not sure what age they get clingy or how to deal with it.No doubt I will be on here, asking for help at some point.

Back onto the subject of ponchos.I mentioned it to my mum,who muttered vaguely about seeing knitting patterns about for them, but that she was very busy knitting cardies for dd at the moment.

hercules · 12/04/2004 20:00

No, no where near as glamorous i'm afraid.

melsy · 14/04/2004 16:58

Lovely kid , youll have to post a piccy of them both. Im living in mine.

Hulababy · 14/04/2004 21:45

Tia - not heard from you. Are you still interested?

Levanna · 15/04/2004 01:04

If anyone 'down south' is looking for a poncho, I saw some great ones at 'Abbey Mill' market (near Morden Hall in Surrey) last Saturday. They had adults and childrens ones, all sorts of colours and textures, good for anyone looking for something a little different maybe. BTW, they have some great craft stands there, apparently it's not as good as it used to be, but I enjoyed it .

Codswallop · 15/04/2004 19:11

soMirage we wil all be in them next winter!

Mirage · 16/04/2004 12:20

Yes Codswallop (don't feel I know you well enough to call you Coddy).

Mirage emerges from an old railway carriage, straw in her hair, trousers held up by baler twine a la' Fast Show & pronounces.'This year we will be mostly wearing Ponchos.'

Thats not so far from the truth really. The thought that anyone would take fashion advice from someone who spends her day in whatever will keep the elements at bay (mostly army surplus I'm afraid)is quite amusing. In fact you have made my day.

Codswallop · 16/04/2004 22:05

ooh i fancy myself in one with boots ,

hmm you may call me what you damn well please!
