Product recalls

Is it just me or are there quite few baby product recalls recently? In the last month I have been affected by 3:
Wooden bead frame from ELC
Stay warm bowl from Mothercare
Teddy rattle from Boots

2 of these were pressies for my baby so I find it a bit upsetting to have to either just get a refund (teddy rattle) or a replacement (bead frame).

Also I think it is pretty bad that manufacturers can't test these products properly before selling them.
What do others think? Have I just had some bad luck or does this happen all the time?

I had a few when ds was young (still got a couple of Ikea dogs given as pressies to dd too). Don't know how you've been notified but this site has a list of those appearing in the press.

They probably couldn't decide whether to class the 'rabbit' under "Toys" or "Electrical Goods"!

erm I found the erm 'rabbit' in the bedroom section.....
or is that just on my pc

Yep. Just found it in the Bedroom section. Apparently the Rampant Rabbit may cause discomfort if a component fails and should be sent back. I pity the poor souls who have to open the parcels when they've been returned.....

I dare say that it's responsible retailers (like Boots, Mothercare, etc.) with corporate images who do the most recalls, are most responsible about it... I bet Poundstretcher does hardly any!! So maybe it just says something about the places your gift-givers liked to shop?

grumpyzebra - not sure that it is totally up to the shop to recall, isn?t there some kind of consumer watchdog body that has the power to do this?

stripeymouse, think it depends on the nature of the "fault". Often the retailers will do a recall voluntarily before it gets as far as Trading Standards. If they have something drawn to their attention which may either compromise their own standards (such as quality control of colour or size) or potentially contravene Safety or Trading Standards legislation (ie. insecure choking hazards or inadequate labelling) then it is more effective to withdraw from sale the offending items at earliest opportunity and limit circulation by advertising a recall. Sometimes things do slip through and are only highlighted by random checks by inspectors.
