Decent children's plates and bowls?

Where can I find some good sized, non-breakable, dishwasher-safe children's plates and bowls? The Ikea stuff is too small now that DS is 4 and is eating larger portions and most of the stuff in the shops is too baby-ish. Still not ready to cut him loose with my crockery though!

Wilkinsons sells some OK stuff - made from melamime I think - bright and colourful! My Dad just bought some for DS when he's at their place.

Tupperware do some quite good plain ones. pricey though.

How about "summer" picnic sets..? Sorry dd is only 16 mon ths so I'm not at this stage yet so have no idea if my suggestion is pants..!!!

I know the likes of Tesco have been selling their summer stock off at cheap prices...

mazzystar · 14/09/2006 16:03

John Lewis has some nice funky melamine stuff, but it ain't that cheap.

I recently bought some bowls, plates and cups from Waitrose, picnic range, nice bright patterns and colours. I also have the tray plates from the PHP catalogue.

ComeOVeneer · 14/09/2006 16:06

Or Asda do childrens sets (cheaper than Waitrose).

Agree with Shhh - I bought outdoor picnicky stuff for DD in the M and S sale about 18 months ago - it's still going strong too !!

I'd like to move to ceramic now (as the dishwasher seems to be eating the covering of the disney princess ones), but chunky and not adult sized - anyone got any recommendations?

Whittards have some nice ones and I think they have a sale on at the mo

feckit · 14/09/2006 16:25

Bearinthebigbluehouse... have a look in Wilko. They have a really quite tasteful range of white chunky ceramic, not too big and 99p per piece. Its what my friend buys with her 3 year old in the house as it is virtually disposable at that price.

BearintheBigBlueHouse · 14/09/2006 16:27

ta, sorry for the hijack

hulababy · 14/09/2006 16:37

Would side plate size in ceramic designs be big enough?

Tex111 · 14/09/2006 16:49

I like the idea of picnic stuff. DD is just ten months so I don't mind paying a bit more if it will last a bit longer. So hard to find a decent sized cereal bowl for DS. Picnic stuff sounds promising though.

Haven't heard of Wilkinson's but will do a quick search.

yeah they would but bowls would need to be a little on the small side IYSWIM

serenity · 14/09/2006 17:15

IKEA do proper plates for 39p, so mine were using those (I think DS2 was 5 when we started though) I figured it wouldn't be a big problem if they broke at that price. I saw it as a trial run for using the 'normal' plates, and when I realised DH broke more things doing the washing up than any of the DCs have, we swopped them to 'adult' plates.

serenity · 14/09/2006 17:18

I was wrong the motto plates in white are only 19p!
