turn double bed into massive cot?

hi i hope you are all well.

thanks in advance for your input...

we have a double bed that i would like to turn into a massive cot for our 9 month old.

there are walls along 2 sides, so i need to blank off the other 2 sides. i would like to effectively have a cot style side rail and end rail, which is say 1 meter tall just like a cot so that he cant climb over it (he climbs over everything! he would easily climb over a bed rail).

ive only managed to find really low bed rails which he could quite easily climb over.

anyone know of a product to do this please?

also - it strikes me as odd that this is relatively unheard of - is there a reason not to do this? the mattress is a normal adults sprung mattress.

My 2yo sleeps in a double bed, bed guard along one side, we did this so when my parents come to stay we can kick him out for them!!

Sorry, I have in no way answered your question!! Perhaps a local craftsman?

HomeIsWhereTheHeartIs · 19/07/2014 21:18

You could put a headboard at one end. Not sure about the remaining side.

ok thanks for your advice guys and girls. looks like i'll have to build something! if anybody else knows of an actual product, let me know please!

I'll ask the obvious question - why??.

It would be like me having a bed the size of my living room!

kevineaton77 · 20/07/2014 18:52

just because its already in his room, and he falls asleep on it - then we have to pick him up (waking him most of the time) and put him in his cot. solution is to turn the bed into a cot!

better ad to that - i mean one of us is next to him on the bed when he falls asleep ( i wouldnt trust him to be on that bed all night without struts, he's a right wriggler!). he can also stand up in his cot so thats why they need to be higher than he is tall!

what a great idea! Might pinch this...

doradoo · 05/08/2014 12:29

You could try something like this - if you could find a way to fix it to the bed?

insancerre · 05/08/2014 12:32

How would you change the bedding?

kevineaton77 · 05/08/2014 12:32

thanks for that ...it would do the job you are right, but its pretty pricey though!

i'll have a think and thanks for your reply.

I would just put a bed guard on both sides. Not high but will stop rolling out and can teach to climb out safely at bottom

Bluecarrot · 05/08/2014 12:39

Make it a futon bed and have a stairgate on the door?

UriGeller · 05/08/2014 12:40

Could you not just get rid of the base and have the mattress on the floor? Then if he rolls out he won't hurt himself.

kevineaton77 · 05/08/2014 13:09

yeah, thats not a bad idea either. would quite like to "contain" him though...dont want him wandering around the room on his own

Look up "montessori" bedroom. Just need to make bedroom safe for them. :)

WhatsGoingOnEh · 06/08/2014 00:35

Please don't do this. The risks are huge if you start trying to DIY something your baby will sleep in. He could get his head trapped between struts or under the edge, it could be painted/varnished with a toxic paint/varnish (teething babies gnaw on everything), let alone the SIDS risk of a baby sleeping on an old, previously used mattress.

Just move the bed out of the room. Or put him down to sleep in his cot (not the bed first) to avoid the problem altogether.

HappyAsASandboy · 06/08/2014 05:24

I have no problem putting a baby to sleep on a double bed, but I would just use bed rails to stop him rolling out and teach him how to climb down through a gap in them (climb down by lying on his tummy and sliding off feet first).

In another 9 months, which really will fly by even though the last 9 seem to be so long, you won't mind him exploring his room. It's not worth the effort or risk of constructing something for such a short length of time.
At 9 months, I used to put our twins to sleep on a king size bed pushed into a corner with a bed rail on one remaining side and the long side of a cot along the bottom. It left a reasonable entrance in the remaining corner, but that was a long way from the corner I had them sleeping in - no way they'd have rolled that far asleep and I'd have heard them wake on the monitor.Stairgate on the door, and child-safe room.

kevineaton77 · 06/08/2014 07:15

thanks for that.

he climbs over everything at the moment. when he wakes up he sits up and stands in his cot withing 30 seconds. im sure it was fine for you but he'll easily climb over a bed rail, possibly before we can get to him. then thats just more height for him to fall from!
